1 Inguinal and Hiatal Hernias
Haley & Ananya

2 What is a Hernia? A bulging organ or tissue through an abnormal opening There are 5 types of hernias: Inguinal, Incisional, Femoral, Umbilical and Hiatal. Inguinal: is when the intestine or bladder protrudes through the abdominal wall or into the inguinal canal in the groin. Hiatal: is when the upper stomach squeezes through the hiatus, which is an opening in the diaphragm where the esophagus passes

3 Inguinal Hernia Causes
Usually happens because an opening in the muscle wall does not close as it should before birth. Which leaves a weak area in the belly muscle It can occur soon after birth or much later in life A likely cause to get a hernia is if you are overweight or you do a lot of heavy lifting, coughing or straining. Even though it is more common in men than women, a woman can get on while she is pregnant due to the pressure on her abdomen wall

4 Inguinal Symptoms Main symptom of an inguinal hernia is a bulge in the groin or scrotum area. Feels like a round lump and it can form over a period of weeks or months It can be painful but sometimes it will just be a lump In the area around the hernia, it feels like it’s burning or tugging.

5 Inguinal Treatments Surgery is the only treatment and cure
Hernia repair is one of the most common surgeries done in the US

6 Hiatal Hernia Causes Exact cause isn't known
Usually caused by injury or too much pressure on the muscles around the stomach which can happen when coughing, vomiting, straining during bowel movements, or lifting heavy objects Another cause can be because the individual is born with an abnormally large hiatus Hiatus: opening in the diaphragm where the esophagus passes

7 Hiatal Symptoms No distinct symptoms but can be associated with heartburn and abdominal discomfort frequent burping, vomiting, hiccupping

8 Hiatal Hernia Treatments
If symptoms don't go down with the help of antacid medications surgery may be required. Pull your stomach into the abdomen and make the diaphragm opening smaller
