A Staff Study On Reduction of Burglar Alarms at School Board Facilities

Executive Summary Miami-Dade County Public Schools has approximately 466 facilities that are alarmed and monitored 24 hours a day and seven days a week. MDSPD is tasked with responding to these calls for service after hours when staffing is at a minimum. 90% of the facilities have older alarm technology and are in need of constant maintenance. The district experienced 8,669 false alarms during the fiscal year. The district experienced 155 Burglaries during the fiscal year. Off the alarms received a Burglary occurs < 2% of the time. MDSPD’s efficiency, fuel consumption and vehicle wear are being impacted. ($145,771.99) This constant level of false alarms poses an indirect threat to officer safety in the form of complacency and vehicle accidents.
