1
Graphing Lines Using Intercepts
Goal: Find the intercepts and use them to graph the equation
2
What are the intercepts?
The x-intercept is the point where a line crosses the x-axis The y-intercept is the point where a line crosses the y-axis
3
Let’s take a look! y y-intercept is 4 (0,4) (7,0) x x-intercept is 7
4
You try it! x-intercept is…. y-intercept is….
5
You try it! x-intercept is…. y-intercept is….
6
You try it!!! x-intercept is…. y-intercept is….
7
Find the x-intercept To find the x-intercept, put a 0 in for y and solve for x 2x + 3y = 6 2x + 3*0 = 6 The x-intercept is 3. the point the line crosses the x-axis is (3,0) 2x = 6 2 2 x = 3
8
You try it! Find the x-intercept 3x – 4y = 12
9
You try it! Find the x-intercept x + 4y = -2
10
Find the y-intercept To find the y-intercept, put a 0 in for x and solve for y 2x + 3y = 6 2*0 + 3y = 6 The y-intercept is 2. The line crosses the y-axis at point (0,2) 3y = 6 y = 2
11
You try it! 3x – 4y = 12
12
You try it! 2x – 17y = -51
13
Challenge y = 4x + 40
14
Choose appropriate scales
We learned in the previous example that the x-intercept is -10 and the y-intercept is 40 (0,40) Sometimes we must scale our coordinate plane to make our answers fit. (-10,0)
15
Summary Find the intercepts
Draw a coordinate plane that includes the intercepts Plot the intercepts and draw a line through them
