1
The Convergence Of ITS and ICT
Grant Saunders Technical Director ITS, ICT and Security Aurecon (Service Line Leader ITS ANZA) Brisbane QLD
2
ICT Traditionally has been internally buildings related Integrated Communications Technologies Huge growth in the Transport ITS OSP Area Road Rail Ports &Airports
3
Roads Based ITS ITS INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS Managed Motorways Include many varieties of hardware from VSLS Signs, VMS, CCTV, ANPR, RCIS TTI, vehicle count and class OHVDS AID & other
4
Public Transport ITS This area also expands into Busway’s, Light Rail, heavy Rail , Ports and Airports Recent example of an ICT installation within an OSP Network for Logan Bus Station Fibre Networks, CCTV, PID ,EMP Phone, PA & SEC
5
ICT OSP in action ITS IS Usually installed as per most OSP applications in challenging environments. Great consideration to harsh conditions i.e. temperature IP ratings types of cabinets connectors etc.
6
The Extremes of ITS in Harsh Environments
7
Cardwell Range ITS Road Safety & Intervention
8
OSP ITS & ICT Examples These OSP ITS Systems are a growing work opportunity within the wider ICT market Port of Brisbane ICT Port Motorway ITS GCRT Light Rail Origen Alliance ITS Sydney Light Rail Inner West
9
ITS Needs enhanced ICT OSP Technical Capabilities
OSP ICT for ITS Requires knowledge Fibre Communication Microwave Communications SHDSL,VDSL,ADSL Technology OSP Pit and Pipe design install WLAN and Multipoint Wireless Digital and Data Radio telemetry TCP/IP Networks SCADA and Next G comms
10
Similar to Buildings ICT but Distinct
Opportunities in Rail on the increase as are Busway’s PID PA Help-phone SCADA CCTV , Access Control
11
ICT Now the main driver in ITS
In the past ITS was predominately delivered by Traffic Engineers and seen also as an Electrical Discipline. This is no way near actual reality now ITS is really a communications dominated solution to Road, Rail Ports and Airports Intelligent Transport requirements. It is the new ground for Integration and Network Excellence
12
Increasing Heavy Reliance On TCP/IP Network Knowledge
Analogue Migration Enormous Communications Backbone
13
Analogue should be dead it is Legacy All New TCP/IP
We need to understand the IP Design and Implementation benefit better. Lots of bad design and delivery decisions have occurred in Australia
14
IP BASED ITS ICT Approach
America and Europe have been leading the way with IP based solutions for ITS Visit to Miami with DOT in 2011 the entire I95 mapped with IP nodes for vehicle speed Lane use IP classification & IP CCTV
15
Light Rail now full ICT OSP TCP/IP Approach
16
Whole Of Life ICT Design and Delivery
What Benefits Seamless Connectivity Scalability Ease of additional Services can be added Common overall platform Access to Edge devices
17
The Connected ITS future with ICT
18
Way forward ITS and ICT Implementation V2V AND V2I
Was around in 2011 Orlando AND THIS WAS DEMONSTRATED AS A REALITY Disneyland Race Track Out with DOT on V2I intersection over-ride trials 5.9 Gigahertz ITS Band DSRC American Trial 300 Connected vehicles and intersections Minnesota DOT Results successful and being released Sept at ITS World Congress. Legislation being introduced for on board computers DSRC
19
Australia Future ITS National Telecommunications Network
Britain has implemented, Europe underway America coming together State by State. Australia will eventually follow suit. Opportunities for all area of ICT and Telecommunications design and implementation NBN will be a big part. Roads authorities Networks need linked State by State
20
Where to from here for our industry
We need more interest in OSP More qualified ICT/OSP BICSI designers and installers for the ITS growth in all these Transport sectors. Cross benefits uses of skills in Minning,Oil Gas water and all other OSP environments Greater IP Network and CCTV knowledge
