3. Closer Look at Flowers
Remember, the job of the flower is to produce the seed
Only angiosperms will produce flowers and fruit
Why they are called “flowering plants”
Of all the land plants on Earth, this is the most diverse group
Make up around 80% of the known plants
Gymnosperms produce seeds, but they are enclosed in cones

4. Flowers Have Male and Female Parts
Pistil (carpel): female part of the flower
Stigma
Style
Ovary (contains ovules; they become seeds after fertilization)
Stamen: male part of the flower
Anther (pollen)
Filament

5. Additional Flower Parts
Petal
Provides color for plant in order to attract pollinators
Sepal
Provides protection to developing bud (will grow into a flower)

6. Fruit and Seeds
Many flowers give rise to fruit, which in turn produce seeds
If an ovule is fertilized by pollen, it becomes a seed
The ovary of the flower becomes the fruit, which protects the seed
Many of our vegetables are fruits by definition as they have seeds
