Giving Back to Our Profession

2 Giving Back Have you ever thought about hosting a school counselor-in-training (CIT) as a site supervisor (SS) in your school? Do you want to learn more about what your responsibilities are and how you know you are qualified? If you have been a SS but still have questions, this session is also for you!

3 Giving Back School Counseling Practicum/Internship Site Supervisors play an important role in making sure M.Ed. in Counseling students get an authentic, meaningful practicum experience based on the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program. Being an SS gives you an opportunity to give back to your profession in an important way. This session is designed to help clarify the role of the SS in the life of a Counselor In Training. (CIT)

Very busy Calendar is fluid No two days are the same Crisis Situations Cannot always be at your side Difficult to stick to a daily plan

5 What we want our students to do at their sites
Be a Self Starter Be where you say you will be, when you say you will be there! Take every opportunity to interact with students Be flexible and open to participation in a variety of school-related activities

Accomplishment of school’s goals Accomplishment of practicum students’ personal and professional development goals Potential problems identified early SS and CIT jointly develop strategies for improvement SS dedicated to assisting CIT, leading to advancement within the profession

8 Synergistic: What Should CIT Do?
This is the best possible scenario so take advantage of it! Contribute equally to the team Understand goals of the department and your role in meeting them Accept and embrace support of your site supervisor Listen, act and learn!

9 What Should CITs Do? Weekly Weeks 1-2
Practicum Site Supervisor (PSS) and Practicum Student (CIT) should meet weekly and discuss happenings. Practicum site Supervisor and Practicum Student should review weekly log Weeks 1-2 CIT should take care of all paperwork CIT should observe the SS CIT should ask questions and learn about how the SS implements the components of the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program SS and CIT should review the Practicum Evaluation Form to know what is expected of the CIT

10 What Should CITs Do? Week 3 – 4
CIT should start assisting PSS to plan lessons/activities CIT should work with PSS to plan a lesson or activity to videotape CIT should start to co-facilitate/teach in classroom school counseling lessons, small groups, individual counseling session Start to observe parent/teacher consultations

11 What Should CITs Do? Week 3 – 8
CIT should plan and instruct some lessons/activities on their own CIT should continue to co-facilitate/teach in classroom school counseling lessons, small groups, individual counseling sessions Continue to observe parent/teacher consultations CIT and SS should complete and discuss Mid-Term Evaluation (Week 7) CIT should set semester goals based on self and SS evaluations

12 What Should CITs Do? Week 9-16
CIT continues practicum experience and working on areas of concern. CIT should facilitate/teach in classroom school counseling lessons, small groups, individual counseling sessions Continue to observe parent/teacher consultations unless asked to participate CIT should complete a Final Self Evaluation SS and CIT should review the CIT’s Self Evaluation and complete the Final Evaluation

13 Weekly Activity Log CIT records dates and times spent in the following areas: School Counseling Curriculum Responsive Services Individual Planning System Support Supervision/Class Time Professional Development Barriers to Implementation (Non School Counseling Activities

14 Weekly Activity Log CIT provides summary of positive experiences and concerns and signs SS completes check box info, provides comments as needed and signs. 15 Assessing Counselor in Training (CIT) Ability
The evaluation process exists primarily for the improvement of effective practice in order to improve student performance To evaluate the quality of the CIT’s ability as a helping professional, Site Supervisors complete both a Formative Assessment (Mid-term) and Summative Assessment (Final) during the semester.

Standard 1: Student Development Standard 2: School Counseling Program Implementation Standard 3: Professional Relationships Standard 4: Leadership and Advocacy Standard 5: Ethical and Professional Conduct

17 Reflect and Plan 1. Did CIT improve knowledge, skills and practice enough to positively impact student outcomes? 2. Did CIT grow personally and professionally? 3. What’s next? 4. Collaborate with site supervisor and CIT to plan for next steps. 5. Continue to acquire new knowledge and practice new strategies and skills.
