About Me 2 minutes
4
My name is… 3 minutes Think of a math word that starts with the first letter of your first name. Piense en una palabra matemática que empiece con la primera letra de su primer nombre. Example: Algebra Aniya Write it on your sheet of paper (in your bin). Escríbalo en su hoja de papel (en su papelera).
5
Good Things 2 minutes
6
Syllabus 10 minutes Jigsaw the syllabus (each table reads own section)
Each table presents their section 1 minute each
7
Objective 2 minutes TURN AND TALK
OBJECTIVE: SWBAT understand growth mindset BY learning how the brain works. TURN AND TALK What is today’s objective in your own words? How does it relate to what we have been doing? Is there any new or important vocabulary?
8
Growth Mindset Stand up if you thought you were good at something, but you didn’t do as well as you expected. Stand up if you sometimes completely forget something you studied. Do any of you ever think about your brain and how to use it best? Perhaps when you are studying or trying to do something well? Stand up if you tried something hard and you gave up, because you couldn’t get it.
9
Growth Mindset Everybody has challenges in school. Turn and Talk (2 minutes) What are some setbacks or problems that you have experienced in your classes in school?
10
Star Wars Why wasn’t Luke successful? What happened?
What did Yoda want Luke to do? What was Yoda’s attitude or belief? Explain to students we are going to watch a video clip from Star Wars. Pay close attention to video. Afterwards we will complete an activity. Play video. Have students stand up and tell them to find a partner. Once they find a partner answer the first question. (1 min). Ask students to share out what they discussed. Tell them to find a new partner and discuss the next question. (1 min). Ask students to share out what they discussed. Continue to the process for all the reminding questions. What Happened? What did Yoda want Luke to do? Why wasn’t Luke successful? (Answer: Yes, he had an attitude that he couldn’t do it.) What was Yoda’s attitude or belief?
11
Growth Mindset Yoda had a Growth Mindset which is a belief that people can learn, change and become better at things with effort, strategies and help. Our brain is muscle. Let’s learn more about the growth mindset.
12
The brain has an amazing ability to grow and develop like a muscle.
Growth MIndset The brain has an amazing ability to grow and develop like a muscle. With a growth mindset, you know that people can learn, change and develop. You know that people aren’t just “dumb” at Math or English; everybody can improve. Now we’re going to learn about what’s going on in your brain. Call on volunteers to read each bullet. Please take some good notes from this PowerPoint, because at the end of this session, you’ll use your notes for a Brain Quiz Show with prizes! Give students a note taker.
14
A Dense Network of Neurons
The brain, when you drill down deeper, is actually a dense network of neurons, or brain cells, that are connected. Now let’s drill down even further to look at just one brain cell, or neuron.
15
Parts of a Neuron dendrites cell body axon transmitters axon
Give each student a note catcher. As the animations play have participants label their neuron. In the diagram below, we’re just looking at one cell. There are several parts that are important. First, you can see the cell body. That’s the center of the cell that houses the genetic material. This material can be altered by the environmental signals the cell receives. The cell receives messages through the dendrites. These cell ends splay out from the cell body to receive information from other nerve cells. Dendrites send information to the cell body, which then puts out its own signal along it’s long cable. We call this long cable the axon. It carries an electrical message out to its transmitters. Putting this all together, the axon transmitter changes this signal to a chemical that crosses a space to the next cell, and that cell picks the signal up with its dendrites, changes it to an electrical message and sends the message back to its own cell body. Now that you can see that the neuron cell has different parts, you may be wondering how the brain thinks thoughts and learns. thoughts. Let’s play a ball tossing game, to show how cells make connections with each other for thinking and learning. axon transmitters axon

Neuron and Synapse Video
In this video, you will hear an additional vocabulary word called Synapse. A synapse is the scientific name for the space between neurons. Remember we talked about the electrical signal reaching the end of the axon, where it changes to a chemical signal that flows across this synaptic space to the next cell. You will hear how your brain cells connect with electrical and then chemical signals— over and over again, from one cell to another.
18
How does your brain think?
Ball Toss How does your brain think? Count students out using 1 and 2. Here’s a game. I’m going to throw a ball to one person in each group, who needs to throw it to another person in the group who is not next to him/her. The ball needs to pass through everyone’s hands. Make sure you remember the order in which you passed the ball. Raise your hands the moment the ball has passed through everyone. 1st time—say: “Ready, go!” note times of each group once hands are raised. 2nd time—say: “I’m going to challenge all of you now to pass the ball around the circle again in the same order. Pass the ball and try to get faster tossing the ball around to everyone (records times). 3rd time—say: “Wow. Look at how times improved. I am seeing that some teams are developing strategies to get even faster. “Let’s try it a third time and race as fast as you can against the clock and other teams.” After they complete the activity, Ask them what happened? Did it get easier or harder? Share out responses. Each time it got easier, right? (Answer: Each time was amazingly faster; learned patterns; tried different strategies; started to predict from experience; got in the “groove.”) This is an example of how our brain transmitts thoughts.
19
Neuron & Synapses In your teams: Explain how we learn in the brain by:
Writing a story Draw a picture Summarize Comic Strip List the steps You choose *Must use vocabulary Synapse = connecting space between neurons Chemicals carry the signal across the space Give each team a chart paper and markers. Now in your teams: draw or write how thoughts and ideas are transmitted in the brain. Use your note catcher to help. 10 minutes max.
20
Brain Gallery Walk Post your poster.
When the timer starts, you will go around to other posters. Write a comment or give praise on each poster. Remember this is a silent gallery walk! Explain the process to students for the gallery walk. Set timer for 3 minutes After students finish, ask them to share out what they say, what they wrote and share out any questions they may have.

Your Brain Needs… Fuel Sleep Exercise Challenge!
With all that energy being used, your brain needs certain things to function well. Fuel: Your brain needs healthy foods with Omega-3’s such as Eggs, Nuts and Fish Sleep: Your brain needs to recharge for at least 1/3 of the time (8-9 hours of sleep). If not you forget things more easily. Exercise: Movement and exercise increase breathing and heart rate so that more blood flows to the brain. A recent study found that walking actually improves memory. Challenge: If you don’t use brain cells, you’ll lose them. Research shows that the more you challenge your brain, the more connections you grow between cells.
22
When you work hard at something, the active neuronal pathways
thicken with connections and they get faster at thought. This is why many people say “practice makes perfect”
23
What does this mean for successful learning?
Your brain forgets when it doesn’t have enough energy or rest. The more your brain muscle practices, the easier it is for the brain to find information. If you tie a new fact to other knowledge that your brain already has, it’s easier for the brain to “get it”. Read slide. Ask question: #2: If you just cram for a test, and don’t study the material except at the last minute, why would your brain be likely to forget the knowledge when the test is over? (Answer: Didn’t practice and space the practice.) Excellent, now we’re going to have a quiz show so you can show off what you learned today.
24
Brain Quiz Show! Take out one white board per table.
When the question goes on the board, you have 30 seconds to write down the answer. If you get it right, you get a point. Team with highest score gets a treat.

Quote of the Day 9/5/17 Reflection
** (Note to self: LP needs clarifying) As the day went on, things went much more smoothly. When writing their names on the paper (with a math word), make sure to give markers and tell them PURPOSE of doing this (so I can see names) Videos didn’t work with BCPS internet First period I didn’t really know what the point was, but got it as I went THE POINT is to emphasize that growth mindset is all about effort. That’s all I need to keep highlighting. Passing the ball activity worked well. Can’t find my squishy ball, so used a highlighter, then a tissue box. Pushed students to come up with this. Did it 3 times to improve the times. WHY was there improvement? Because we TRIED. Tied a lot of things to the Yoda Quote (Effort, strategies, and help). Also tied to “Mistakes are Proof that You’re Trying” poster. When I really drilled this 3rd period, it seemed to click better.
