OUR SOLAR SYSTEM The NINE PLANETS
2
OVERVIEW Today we are going on a tour of our solar system.
We will be visiting the nine planets and classifying them by size, composition, and distance from the sun.
3
LET’S GO!!!! Hop on to our space shuttle and let’s begin!!!
4
The Sun All Planets rotate around the sun.
The sun is the largest object in our solar system. The sun is 1.4 million kilometers in diameter.
5
Mercury * Mercury is the closest planet to the sun.
* Mercury varies in distance from the sun. It can range from million kilometers away. * Mercury is 5,000 kilometers in diameter. * Mercury is made up of Iron and has a thin layer of rock on the surface.
6
Venus Venus is the second planet from the sun.
Venus is 105 million kilometers from the sun. Venus is 12,100 kilometers in diameter. Venus is made up of iron, rock and lava.
7
Earth Earth is the third planet from the sun.
Earth is 150 million kilometers from the sun. Earth is 12,800 kilometers in diameter. Earth is made up of iron, water, and has an atmosphere which is made of many different gases.
8
Mars Mars is the fourth planet from the sun.
Mars varies from million kilometers from the sun. Mars is 6,800 kilometers in diameter. Mars is made up of iron and rock. It has a thin atmosphere of gases.
9
Jupiter Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun.
Jupiter is million kilometers from the sun. Jupiter is 142,800 kilometers in diameter. Jupiter is a gas planet. It is made up of Hydrogen and Helium.
10
Saturn Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun
Saturn is 1,427 million kilometers from the sun Saturn is 120,000 kilometers in diameter Saturn is also a gas planet. It is made up of the gases Hydrogen and Helium.
11
Uranus Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun.
Uranus is 2.7 – 3.1 Billion kilometers from the sun. Uranus is 51,800 kilometers in diameter. Uranus is a gas planet the is made up of methane, Hydrogen, Helium.
12
Neptune Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun.
Neptune is 4.3 – 4.6 Billion kilometers from the sun. Neptune is 49,500 kilometers in diameter. Neptune is made up of melted rock, methane, Hydrogen, Helium.
13
Pluto Pluto is the ninth planet from the sun.
Pluto is 4.3 – 7.2 Billion kilometers from the sun. Pluto is 2,080 kilometers in diameter. Pluto is made up of rock and frozen “ices” which are made up of methane and ammonia.
14
Comparing sizes This graph shows how big each planet is around in kilometers. Notice how much bigger Jupiter and Saturn are than the rest of the planets
