7 Reading Formulas Elements and Compounds are written using chemical formulas
Chemical formulas represent the composition of a molecule or compound, like a recipe. Symbols identify which elements are in the substance. First letter of an element symbol is capital, any others are lower case. (just like your name) Subscripts identify how many atoms of a particular element are in a molecule. If an element in a formula does not have a subscript, then the subscript is 1
