Warm up (p. 6): Analyze the Matter Diagrams. For each diagram: 1. Identify it is a pure substance or a mixture If it is a pure substance, identify it as an element or a compound. Explain your reasoning for each of the six diagrams. Date Session # Activity Page # 9/6-7 3 Diagram warm up Breaking matter into simpler substances 6 Elements, Compounds, Mixture Article & ?’s turned in and graded, you will get this back later 7 Reading a Formula 8 Homework:
2
TLW describe classifications of matter by closely reading text, answering text questions and properly reading formulas.
4
Difference between elements and compounds… What question can you ask yourself?
All components of the material are the same. CANNOT be separated by physical means No Yes Different components of the mixture can be seen? Made of two or more types of atoms? Can be broken down into simpler substances?

Reading Formulas Elements and Compounds are written using chemical formulas
Chemical formulas represent the composition of a molecule or compound, like a recipe. Symbols identify which elements are in the substance. First letter of an element symbol is capital, any others are lower case. (just like your name) Subscripts identify how many atoms of a particular element are in a molecule. If an element in a formula does not have a subscript, then the subscript is 1
8
Reading Formulas symbol In the following example: H2O Subscript for H = 2. There are 2 atoms of Hydrogen in a single water molecule Subscript for O = 1. There is one atom of Oxygen in a single water molecule. subscript
9
In the example C6H12O6 Atoms of C in a single molecule of glucose: ______ Atoms of H in a single molecule of glucose: _____ Atoms of O in a single molecule of glucose: _____
