1 Erasmus + “Stand Up!“

2 Auto-da-fé in the Plaza Mayor of Madrid 1683
FRANCISCO RIZI Madrid, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, 1685

3 Origin: Portuguese, ato de fé, which means, “Act of faith”
Represents ideological and political discrimination A public ceremony to judge former Jews, former Muslims, Protestants and criminals The first auto-da-fé took place at Sevilla in 1481; the last, in Mexico in 1850 The ceremonies became increasingly spectacular and were normally staged in the city plaza, often in the presence of royalty The most extreme punishments were life imprisonment and execution by burning Rizi’s painting is the finest and most detailed depiction of one of these events

4 La boda 1791-1792 FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES
Fuendetodos, Zaragoza, Burdeos, Francia, 1828

5 “La boda” – “ The wedding” shows a beautiful young woman who has just married an ugly, fat man
Goya ridicules the mutual benefits the bride and groom gain from the marriage This story denounces a common situation of that period: marriages arranged by parents for their own benefit The bride has clearly married the ugly, fat man for his money and has little other interest in him, as shown by her generally aloof attitude While the groom compensates for his ugliness with a young, beautiful, and superficial wife The masterful placement under an arch uses the architecture to frame the group, emphasizing the figures against the bright background, especially the nasty groom Many wedding guests are also aware of the ridiculousness of the couple
