6 Air masses Name Source area Weather characteristics
Tropical Maritime (mT) Atlantic Ocean Warm and wet Tropical Continental (cT) Southern Europe and North Africa Warm and dry Polar Maritime (mP) North Atlantic Cold and wet Polar Continental (cP) Northern Europe Cold and dry Arctic Maritime (mA) Arctic Ocean Very cold. Not always wet due to low humidity.

14 Describe the changes in weather that the people of London are likely to see in the next 24hrs.

15 London will experience changing weather as it is in the middle of a low pressure system.
As London is currently in a warm sector it will be relatively warm and dry (1), it has no fronts above it so there will be a clear sky and no rain (1). As the cold front moves in the temperature will drop (1) and winds will increase (1). The cold front will bring heavy rainfall (1) and possibly thunderstorms. As the cold front passes London will continue to have low temperatures but the rainfall will be less heavy and there will just be some showers (1 or 2). After the fronts have passed there is a band of higher pressure and the sky will be clear with little to no wind. Model answer
