Cracker Barrel A $100 million dollar lawsuit was filed against Cracker Barrel in 2001 by 21 individuals. The lawsuits were based on segregation in the restaurants in which black customers were seated in the smoking section. These customers were also denied service. “It was the largest civil rights lawsuit against a restaurant chain since Denny’s settled a $46 million discrimination lawsuit in 1994” In addition to Racial intolerance, Cracker Barrel scored 15 out of 100 on the HRC Corporate Equality Index by failing to provide: Diversity training covering sexual orientation Prohibit Discrimination based on gender Etcetera "CRACKER BARREL DINERS ALLEGE DISCRIMINATION." Guiding Behavior Using these Ethics Principles all business behavior should be done to provide: The greatest service to all stakeholders in the company Equal representation and tolerance of stakeholders in all races, cultures, sexual orientation, or any other form of diversity Fair opportunity in hiring and promotion process

Advantages Protects the company against lawsuits
Protects customers and employees against unlawful discrimination Ensures future economic efficiency and less liability through the reduction of lawsuits Maintains a good reputation that will ensure customer loyalty Obtain a more diverse corporate structure Obtain a more diverse customer base Improve hiring process by possibly adding more qualified individuals into the workforce

Disadvantages Possible negative feedback from current employees or management Retraining employees could increase costs Increased costs of monitoring to ensure guidelines are being followed Firing of current employees to hire more qualified and tolerant employees

Specific Recommendations
Accept complaints and act to ensure they are taken into consideration Creation of specific guidelines to ensure tolerance is met across the board 3rd party monitoring system to maintain guidelines Actions taken to improve the HRC Corporate Index score Corporate action (firing) taken for any employee who is found not abiding by the Ethical guidelines. Specified training in the importance of Diversity and tolerance
