2 Meters and More Association
International non-profit association based in Brussels created in 2010 to maintain and support the open communication protocol for Smart Metering solutions Aims: support Smart Metering standardization process and ensure interoperability of devices and applications Founding members: e-distribuzione S.P.A. and Endesa Distribución Eléctrica S.L. Structured with a Board of Directors and three committees (for Protocol Specifications, for Product Certification and for Communication Activities) More than 45 members among world leading companies and institutions, have already joined the Association.

4 Beyond the Meter: the Energy Gateway
The MandM Energy GW allows the communication between any ECD (end customer device) and the relevant SM is a LNAP (local network access point) could include an ECD or a IHD (in home Display) interface to the Meter (M2G) is the focus; it is based on a complete PLC-based SMITP profile and Data Model (with enhancements) interface to the ECD (M2E) shall be any, according to open standards or dedicated solutions ECD Meter GW M2G Interface G2E

5 Main characteristics:
Energy Gateway Versatility Main characteristics: SMITP B-PSK power line technology, CENELEC A / C - Band CSMA-CA (collision avoidance) Two communication modes: Push (or NCM - Network Control Mode) where the Data Concentrator is always Master Pull (or ICM – Interactive Control Mode) where the Gateway can act as master of the communication with the Meter SMITP security and advanced pairing procedure Access to potentially any meter data, according to the Utility’s policy Real Time data update to the End User Flexibility facilitates the accomplishment of different National Authorities resolutions (e.g. Chain 2 in Italy)

8 The MandM Energy GW : main advantage
Meters and More Gateway: Customer Interface for Value Added Service The MandM Energy GW : main advantage Bidirectional multi frequency and multi mode PLC communication for a direct connection to the SM No need of additional device (no clamps, no repeater) Low cost solution (just one device) Easy installation: any plug of your house Reliability of communication Big amount of “real” data (rich data model) ECD Meter GATEWAY M2G Interface G2E

10 Meters and More Gateway: Use Cases – example 1
CUSTOMER AWARERNESS The customer is able to view and manage his electrical consumptions at any time, his energy production (in the case of prosumer), the amount of consumed power from the grid as well as the consumption of the intelligent devices present in home. The customer has knowledge of the costs / revenues of consumption and production. The customer is informed about the status of the contract and the cost of the time slots OVERLOAD MANAGEMENT Optimization of the use of power in order to avoid Home Domain Overload. The customer can define/modify the load shedding priorities and strategies in case of a Home Domain Overload, to be applied to smart and non-smart appliances.

11 ACTIVE DEMAND AND LOAD SHIFTING TO REDUCE CONSUMPTION AT PEAK TIME
Meters and More Gateway: Use Cases – example 2 ACTIVE DEMAND AND LOAD SHIFTING TO REDUCE CONSUMPTION AT PEAK TIME Demand Response as changes in electric usage by end-consumers from their current consumption patterns in response to incentive payments designed to adjust electricity usage in response to the market prices or when system reliability is jeopardized. APPLIANCES TIMING OPTIMIZATION USING INFORMATION ABOUT CURRENT AND FORECASTED ENERGY PRODUCTION To notify suggestions about when an appliance should be used based not only on the current and forecasted consumptions, but also on the current and forecasted production of the photovoltaic plant MULTI-TARIFF ENERGY USE OPTIMIZATION IN CASE OF SMART AND NON-SMART APPLIANCES The customer can define/modify the house rules for the energy costs optimization in case of single or multiple appliances. For any appliances the customer can set parameters like the operational time interval allowed for the device. The Smart Appliances can activate enhanced features that guarantee to the whole set of devices to minimize user cost according to the variable tariffs.

12 THE GATEWAY ARCHITECTURE: hardware agnostic
Meters and More Gateway: Tools and Final Results THE GATEWAY ARCHITECTURE: hardware agnostic Gateway is a logical implementation of a communication interface (M2G) This is how Meters and More define GATEWAY in specification documents. For test purpose we need to have a piece of HW where we can add the logical implementation of communication interface. For WP3 it is not important what the HW looks like. The only requirement is that we shall be able to test our protocol on that HW.
