5 Vocabulary Set 1 Inference (noun): a conclusion or opinion that is formed because of known facts or evidence Annotate (verb): to add notes or comments to (a text, book, drawing, etc.) to help determine meaning Close Reading (noun): thoughtful, critical analysis of a text that focuses on significant details or patterns in order to develop a deep, precise understanding of the text's form, craft, meanings, etc.  Bias (noun): a tendency to lean in a certain direction, often to the detriment of an open mind Tone (noun): a quality, feeling, or attitude expressed by the words that someone uses in speaking or writing Diction (noun): the way in which words are used in speech or writing Denotation (noun): the literal meaning of a word or phrase Connotation (noun): an idea or quality that a word makes you think about in addition to its meaning Imagery (noun): language that causes people to imagine pictures in their mind
