[in addition to building community, this routine functions as a review] Copies of notes?

5 Humanistic Psychology
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs Established as a reaction to behaviorism Humanism: Person is in control REVIEW Established as a reaction to behaviorism: Environment and other outside forces are only background to personal growth At a time when most psychologists thought motivation was driven by a need to make up for some physical or psychological deficit, Maslow introduces a very optimistic view of human motivation.

6 Humanistic Psychology
REVIEW Humanists believe free will and potential for personal growth guide mental processes and behavior View of behavior: Individual or self-directed choices influence our behavior

7 Cognitive Psychology I need a volunteer… Video: Conservation
What’s going on? Jean Piaget REVIEW Teacher asks for volunteer for experiment. Teacher replicates CONSERVATION experiment: Pour equal amount of dyed water in two cups, ask volunteer if they think they are the same amount [YES]. Pour water from one cup into tall, skinny vase; ask “Do you think this glass has more water, this glass has more water, or that they have the same amount?” [SAME] Having seen me pour it, do you think it’s obvious they have the same amount of water? How would you characterize someone who saw that experiment and said one was greater than the other? [expect “crazy”, “blind” etc.] Do you think it might be hard to relate, about certain things, with someone who processed information so differently from the way you process information? What would you say if I told you that you and everyone in this room used to think there was more water in the vase? Hmmmm… I have a video that may help us understand. [play video] What’s going on? [click] Jean Piaget noticed that small children had thoughts and perceptions strikingly different from those of adults. They seemed to process information differently. He started to investigate and eventually would describe 4 stages of cognitive development

8 Cognitive Psychology Four Stages of Cognitive Development
REVIEW

9 Cognitive Psychology View of behavior: How we process, store and retrieve information influences our behavior. NOTE: “Behavior” includes thoughts, feelings and state of consciousness. REVIEW Teacher reads info Cognitive psychologists emphasize the importance of receiving, storing and processing information; of thinking and reasoning; and of language to understanding human behavior. How is this different from Behavioral Psychologists?

10 Sociocultural Psychology
What would you say… …if I came to your house for dinner and make loud slurping noises as I ate? Video: Sociocultural Psychology REVIEW Teacher leads discussion. Would you think I was rude? --OR-- Would you think I was paying you a compliment? In Japan, slurping your food is a compliment to the cook. [click] If I was Japanese, or raised in Japan, or had spent the last several years there, perhaps it would be meant as a compliment. [watch video]

11 Sociocultural Psychology
View of behavior: Ethnicity, gender, culture, and socioeconomic status influence our behavior. REVIEW As international travel became more common in the second half of the 20th century, psychologists began to recognize that people from different cultures interpret gestures, body language and spoken language differently from one another.

12 Biological Psychology
Article: Teens and Decision Making: What Brain Science Reveals Phineas Gage Video #1 Video #2 NEW MATERIAL BEGINS HERE Teacher distributes article/guided notes; Directs students to read article. Use reading time to load videos Teacher has students watch videos, then answer questions Video #1 – first 2:30 minutes Video #2 – all (8:49 minutes)

13 Biological Psychology
View of behavior: Biological factors influence our behavior. Psychobiologists study how genetics, hormones, the nervous system and the brain influence behavior. Technology has enabled scientists to examine how complex chemical and biological processes within the nervous and endocrine systems are related to the behavior of humans (and other organisms) Many biological psychologists think that the mind is what the brain does.

14 Stamps: Glossary Peer Review Work with someone you don’t know well
Term & Page # Symbol In my words Book definition Peer Review Work with someone you don’t know well Pick who will be Partner A & B Take turns: Only one person talking at a time. Other partner is listening & writing notes. Teacher distributes Peer Review sheets; directs students to do Peer Review of Glossary terms. Teacher STAMPS Glossary terms as students work through Peer Review Teacher collects Peer Reviews at end of class

15 Psychological Research: Popsicle Sticks
Difference between longitudinal studies and cross-sectional studies? Correlation vs. Causation Single-Blind vs. Double-Blind Random sample vs. Stratified sample Teacher uses popsicle sticks to pull random student for 1st 2 questions. For second two questions, make sure there is proportional representation of males and females. Tie into Ques#4 re: random vs. stratified samples. Longitudinal = same group over a long period of time; Cross-sectional = random sampling of groups based on age Correlation = relationship between 2 variables/data; Causation = one thing causes another to happen Single-blind = experimenter aware of which patients received treatment; Double-blind = neither experimenter nor participants know which patients received treatment Random sample = each individual has an equal chance of being represented; Stratified sample = subgroups in the population are represented proportionately in the sample
