1
Aim: How do we describe the critical angle for a medium?
HW:
2
Activity Go to the station you are assigned in the room and solve for the angle described using Snell’s Law!
3
Use Snell’s Law to identify the angle of refraction in ALL mediums and the angle of reflection at the mirror base.
4
What is the difference? Example: Fiber Optic Cables
Critical Angle: Smallest angle of Incidence for which light is totally reflected The Critical Angle occurs when the refracted angle is 90 degrees. Example: Fiber Optic Cables
5
Dispersion The separating of a light ray into its colors
Caused by the refraction of light Each color has a slightly different index of refraction which means that each color bends a little more than the last causing a rainbow
6
Critical angle of a waterfall
7
Practice What is the critical angle for a light ray traveling from corn oil into diamond? What occurs when light hits the diamond at an angle greater than the critical angle?
8
Exit Card Use your knowledge of friction to answer the questions on your exit card. Be sure to hand in your exit card when it is complete.
9
What are the three main formulas regarding refraction?
Explain what each formulas describes. Describe the critical angle!
10
Critical Angle Lab Goals:
To use Snell’s Law and the ideas of refraction to determine the critical angle of water. To verify the law of reflection
