1 POST GRADUATE REGISTRY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH POST GRADUATE REGISTRY PROF IS HUMAN FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES HEAD OF PROGRAMME: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & MR H VAN DER WESTHUIZEN RETIRED HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL STUDIES

2 CONTENTS BACKGROUND PURPOSE OF A POST GRADUATE REGISTRY
INFORMATION NEEDED DATABASE WHY GIS AS A DATABASE? WHAT IS GIS DEMONSTRATION OF FEATURES OF DB ABILITIES OF GIS

3 BACKGROUND During the first ever joint meeting between SALGA, SAIEH and Higher Institutions held on 05 October 2016 in Pretoria, the need for a postgraduate database of Environmental Health Practitioners was identified. Dr Mudaly and Prof Human were requested to develop this registry. Mr Van der Westhuizen took the initiative to plot the information on a GIS database which was presented to Dr Mudaly during November 2016.

4 PURPOSE OF REGISTRY The purpose of this registry is:
To establish a database for Masters and Doctorate graduates in Environmental Health. To identify ways in which Environmental Health Practitioners can become motivated to further their studies towards a Masters or Doctorate degree in Environmental Health. To expand the Environmental Health profession with regards to the number of Masters / Doctorate graduates. To identify research funding as well as research expertise in order to support postgraduate students.

5 INFORMATION NEEDED The following information is requested for the registry: Name of graduate; Name of degree; Institution where obtained; Year obtained; Title/topic; Primary qualifications; Employment details; Job designation; Address; Contact details and HI number.

6 DATABASE The data obtained from the EHP’s will be captured in Excel and then linked to a GIS database. Hence the request for information at registration.

7 WY GIS AS DATABASE? Advantages GIS
Technology available at most municipalities Used for emergency services, Sewage etc. Theoretically all EHP’s should have access to the programme. It can store vast volumes of data thus serving as a data warehouse Compatible with Excel and therefore easy to update the data. It visually displays data thus providing a better perspective Able to conduct searches on data. When specific skills or knowledge is required to solve problems searches may be conducted on GIS to find colleagues that have the skills. Easy to use

8 WHAT IS GIS? GIS is a database that can store large volumes of data and present this data to the user in visual format within the context of a geographic location. GIS arranges data into layers that can be switched on or off in order to facilitate the understanding and interpretation of data.

9 MAP AS BASE LAYER

10 BASEMAP WITH LOCATION OF EXPERTS PLOTTED

11 ENLARGE FOR BETTER VIEW
Hover with cursor on location and information pops up.

12 DATA STORED IN DATA TABLES WHICH ARE CONNECTED TO THE MAPS

13 FINDING DATA IN COMPREHENSIVE TABLES IS DIFFICULT
By clicking with the information key on a specific site all the data to that site is revealed

14 INFORMATION ON THE EXPERT IN FOOD AND MEAT HYGIENE IN CAPE TOWN.
Extracted from table and ready for scrutiny

15 NO LIMITATIONS ON DATA Data capturing is not limited to one feature or country Several layers may be compiled to provide new perspectives It is possible to create a database that contains information on EHP’s and institutions all over the world E.g. The location and names of Universities in Africa belonging to the African Academy of Environmental Health

16 VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF SOME UNIVERSITIES OF THE AFRICAN ACADEMY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
Names of Universities appear when one hovers with the cursor over a specific location

17 SUMMARY A database with the expertise in EH can serve the professional community well as motivator or in assisting in finding specialists to assist with specific problems. GIS is an ideal database which visually displays data and can extract the required data from the database at the click of a mouse or by conducting searches within the data table. GIS is powerful enough to unify data for EHP’s across the world.
