Senses Chapter 29
2
What you need to know! The location and function of sensory receptors
3
Sensation vs Perception
Sensation is when the brain receives input from the senses Black splotches Perception is when the brain constructs meaning from the sensation Dog
4
Sensory Receptors Sensory receptors are specialized neurons that detect energy Sensory receptors transform the energy of the stimuli into a receptor potential (graded action potential) Sensory receptors can adapt to continuous stimuli Hot shower becomes bearable Comfort adjusts to the cold ocean Skunk smell dissipates over time (so does your body odor)
5
Vision Electromagnetic receptors – detect electricity, magnetism or light Photoreceptors – most common electromagnetic receptors Rods are hypersensitive and see shades of grey; they make up our night vision and periphery (125 million) Cones see color and are focused in your fovea (6 million)
6
Hearing Mechanoreceptors – stimulated by mechanical energy (including sound waves) The ear bones rattle the fluid in the cochlea making waves Auditory receptors detect the frequencies of the fluid movement
7
Skin Receptors Pain receptors – detection of damage (or potential damage), everywhere but the brain Thermoreceptors – detect either heat or cold Mechanoreceptors – detect mechanical energy such as touch, pressure, stretching, motion
8
Smell & Taste Chemoreceptors – attuned to chemicals in our environment and within our body (homeostasis)
9
