Important Terms Population Distribution
This term refers to where people in a country choose to live. Some countries - the population is evenly distributed throughout the country Other countires - the population is concentrated in a few areas.

Archipelago Effect When the population of a country is grouped (concentrated) in pockets of settlements. Look around your class. What do you notice about how people are arranged? The seating arrangement in this class is an example of the archipelago effect Canada’s population is characterized by the archipelago effect.

Population Density This term refers to how closely together people live in a given geographic area (country, province, or city). Population density is usually given as persons per square km. Ex. According to the 2001 Census the population density of the city of Saint John, NB is persons/km2.

Determining Population Density
The formula for determining population density is easy. Just Kidding !

To determine population density simply divide the number of people living in an area by the size of that area. For example, the population of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality is 105,968. The size of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality is 2, km2. 105,968 ÷ 2, = 43.5 persons/km2
