ME 59700 Fall 2014 Introduction to Systems Engineering
Session 28 Dr. Dan C. Surber, ESEP © Copyright 2013
2
Lecture Topics People, Methods, Tools, & Environment (PMTE)
Integrated Product & Process Development Systems (IPPDS) Integrated Product Teams (IPT) Capability Maturity Model-Integrated (CMMI)
3
PMTE People Methods Tools Environment
Training is part of annual operating plan Career management supported/encouraged Methods Stability of policy, processes, procedures Mentoring & coaching are part of the culture Tools A few, but EVERYONE is capable Knowledge, skills & abilities are ENABLED by tools Environment Friendly but challenging Be a “member” & a “contributor” (not “center” & “consumer”) Challenges are available; Failure is OK; Learn from mistakes
4
People: Selection & Training
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSA) Experience & Diversity of Backgrounds Multi-disciplinary teams Able to work in teams or alone Leaders who can also follow Make decisions: facts & data based Integrity, honesty, fearless
5
IPPDS What is integrated? Published Processes Product Development
Engineering (SE, SW, HW, Test, Logistics) Supply Chain Manufacturing Program Management Published Processes Command media Concurrent engineering Product Development Design review structure Phase gate review structure Entry & Exit criteria Team ownership of cost & schedule Manage “inventory”, LEAD people Accountability Top down Open & honest communication (early notification of issues, risks, failures) Wheelwright & Clark, REVOLUTIONIZING PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, Heavy weight teams, medium weight teams, light weight teams.
6
IPTs Clear lines of responsibility, scope, authority
Ownership of the product Cost Schedule Technical Risk Nesting is OK, but INTERFACES must be CLEAR Interfaces need OWNERS Interfaces are like Ogres (who are like onions) How are people resourced to IPTs, projects, functions? “light weight” teams (just for life of the project duration) “functional” home allocates people to projects & teams “heavy weight” teams (own the people & their development)
7
Process Capability/Maturity
5 Levels (focus is on Software, Systems Eng, SCM) Everyone starts at Level 1 (Chaotic) 18-36 months to progress to next level Assessments determine progression through levels An assessment can cost $250K to $1M Reviewed/renewed every 3 years “Say what you will do, DO what you say, Have EVIDENCE that you DID what you said.” Gather metrics and apply continuous improvement LEARN IMPROVE, by increments Other Engineering Disciplines & Manufacturing need to be included The organization is a VALUE STREAM If you touch the product without ADDING value, that’s WASTE CMM-I; ISO-9001; GRCSE on line; other standards (15288, 12220, 632)
8
Culture Changes Needs a champion – must have vision Long view
Patience; accept less than perfect Aggressive changes are fast – if your life is threatened Slower change allows assimilation of learning SEE DEMING!
