The Aztecs were a wandering nomad tribe who were led by Tenoch
The Aztecs were a wandering nomad tribe who were led by Tenoch. They were looking for a new homeland and according to legend, their leader would find a snake being eaten by an eagle, sitting on a prickly pear cactus on a rock. It was here that they would find their city.

Causeways linked the island to the lakeside. The Aztecs created artificial islands/fields called chinampa for farming. Canals between allowed travel by boat. Some of these fields are still used by Mexicans today. Map of Tenochtitlan which shows the causeways, the Sacred Precinct containing the Templo Mayor & many other buildings, and the main Palaces. The twin town of Tlateloico can also be seen.
