The Aztecs were a wandering nomad tribe who were led by Tenoch. They were looking for a new homeland and according to legend, their leader would find a snake being eaten by an eagle, sitting on a prickly pear cactus on a rock. It was here that they would find their city.

Causeways linked the island to the lakeside. The Aztecs created artificial islands/fields called chinampa for farming. Canals between allowed travel by boat. Some of these fields are still used by Mexicans today.
