Tether Management

To begin, collect the pieces shown below: your tether
and the ROV end of your management system. Don’t confuse that black piece for the one that goes on the control box end.

Slide the black strain relief
connector onto the tether, make sure the threaded part is toward the end. Give yourself a good amount of slack, as this can be modified later.

In order to cinch down on the wire, simply tighten the nut.
Finger-tight will suffice until you near completion.

Then screw the custom PVC connector onto the strain relief connector.
Now the tether is ready to be wired up to your motors. Don’t tighten too much yet, in case unforeseen adjustments become necessary.

According to MATE standards,
this should be the orientation of your wiring. Technically, you could pair any two wires together. In order to keep things simple and uniform, MATE suggests these combinations.

Now you can begin the soldering process!
Make sure to slide on heat-shrink before you begin to solder! Note that color coding.

Six wires later, you’re done!
Note the beads of hot glue protruding from the heat-shrink. That’s how you know it’s nice and watertight. Save any further covering for after you’ve wired your tether to your board. You’ll save yourself frustration in case a connection doesn’t work.

We chose to internally wire ours. This is certainly an option for
your club’s ROV, but make sure to address it in the planning phase. If you do wire internally, make sure that you have an access point for your connections.
