12. The Anaconda Plan Designed by General Winfield Scott
Was supposed to choke the Confederacy like an Anaconda
Massive blockade that ran along the Mississippi River through the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic Coast Line

13. Attempts to break the blockade
The blockade was held together by thousands of Union warships
Some of these warships were nothing more than platforms with cannons
There were several attempts to break the blockade with force but none succeeded
Blockade Runners were men loyal to the Southern cause that would sneak through in order to get much needed supplies to the Confederacy

14. Siege
Both sides used their Naval forces to lay siege to forts and cities
One of the most famous sieges of the war took place at Vicksburg, Mississippi where Union forces surrounded the city and bombed it for 47 days before they surrendered
The Navy blocked off access to the city’s port and fired shells constantly

The North used transport ships more because they had the blockade to protect them
A large number of troops were transported South from Northern states on transport ships
They were also taken back to the North on ships to be taken care of if seriously wounded
