Spain's presence mainly consisted of Catholic Missions Spain begins to lose colonial dominance due to the sinking of the Spanish Armada in 1588 Allows Britain to emerge as a new world power

The lost colony of Roanoke – 1585 Sir Walter Raleigh given permission by Elizabeth I Location of New World named Virginia Colony was a complete failure

British Colonization Jamestown – 1607
Jamestown – 1607 James I issues Virginia Company a charter to settle east coast of Virginia 104 men arrive in Jamestown and establish the first permanent British colony Men were there to find riches ill prepared to survive There will be cycles of death and more immigrants for the first 2 years Leadership will be lacking greatly It will take 4 years for an actual stable colony to emerge Stability strongly tied to cultivation of tobacco (brown gold)

The lost colony – Directions
The purpose of this activity is to make hypotheses about what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke. Please get into groups of 2 - 4 Have one person from the group come and grab the data sheets As a group you need to read through all of the given documents You should be highlighting and adding notes Once you have read through the documents please send one person to come and grab the inquiry sheet As a group you must document and write as many hypotheses as you can citing specific evidence to back up your claims… as well as any discrediting evidence, if any. Be prepared to share your findings with the class.

Language Geography Art Traditions food/diet government/leadership religion Symbols that represent the tribe Must be hand drawn and colored All information must be neatly placed on the provided paper/poster
