2 Acids… Contain one or more H+ when dissolved in water
Anion combined with as many H+ as needed to make the molecule neutral Two types of acids 1. Binary: H + non-metal (HCl) 2. Oxyacid: H + polyatomic ion (H2SO4)

3 Binary Acids Form when certain gaseous compounds dissolve in water
Naming depends on state of acid HCl(g)  hydrogen chloride If it is dissolved in water (aq)  hydro- (nonmetal root) -ic acid HI(aq) HCl(aq) H2Se(aq)

4 Oxyacids Naming does NOT depend on the state Name the polyatomic ion
Replace –ate with –ic or… Replace –ite with -ous Change non-metal root for pronunciation Add “acid” HBrO HIO2 (perbromate) (iodite)

5 Bases Ionic compounds that produce OH- when dissolved in water
Follow same rules for naming ionic compounds NaOH Ca(OH)2 Fe(OH)3
