1 Improving an Air Quality Decision Support System through the Integration of Satellite Data with Ground-Based, Modeled, and Emissions Data Demonstration Application with CMAQ Sarav Arunachalam and Uma Shankar Institute for the Environment University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Presented at the NASA ROSES DSS Design Workshop Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere Ft Collins, CO May 12-13, 2008

2 Developed under the community modeling paradigm
Modular, One-atmosphere, Portable Integrated one-atmosphere treatment of tropospheric O3, acid deposition, visibility, fine PM, toxics, mercury Extensively used and evaluated by the scientific as well as regulatory community Bi-annual external peer-reviews to advance state-of-the science in the model CMAQ Version 4.6 released in Fall 2006 Version 4.7 expected in Fall 2008 Requires inputs from emissions and meteorology models, ICs and BCs CMAQ = Chemical Transport Model + preprocessors UNC hosts the Center for Community Modeling and Analyses System (CMAS) CMAS provides support, outreach and training of CMAQ for a worldwide user community

3 CMAQ Demonstration Application for DSS
Model year: 2006 or later to take advantage of OMI (2004+) and CALIPSO (2006+) measurements EPA currently developing 2006/2007 annual application Committed to sharing inputs and outputs for project team Continental U.S. modeling domain at 36-km horizontal grid resolution Emissions estimates from EPA’s National Emissions Inventories (NEI) 2005 Will probably be updated for the 2006/2007 model year Future year emissions scenarios (2018, 2020, ?)

4 Modeling Domain for CMAQ

5 Enhancements in CMAQ Application
Improve lateral and vertically varying boundary conditions for CMAQ using 2007 satellite data Replace fire emissions estimates in NEI using refined estimates from Fire Scenario Builder / Bluesky-EM models (Shankar et al, 2006) Evaluate CMAQ model performance against 3-D satellite measurements Closely interact with UMBC personnel for proper interpretation of satellite data

6 Atmospheric Model Evaluation Tool (AMET) Enhancements
EPA developed AMET to evaluate CMAQ, MM5 and WRF against surface measurements (Gilliam et al, 2005) AQ networks include AQS, CASTNet, STN, IMPROVE, SEARCH Meteorological data from NOAA’s Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS) AMET has 3 main components Observation-model matching module (perl) Relational database module (MySQL) Statistical (and graphical) analysis module (R ) UNC has recently integrated meteorological and air quality components of AMET into a single package We will enhance AMET to include capability to process satellite measurements for DSS
