16 Identify the author if not widely known
If the person is not widely known, then identify how you know them: Susan, my best friend, always says, “Anger is only one letter short of danger.” Mr. Smith, our school principal, said on the announcements, “It is wiser to choose what you say than say what you choose.” However don’t get carried away! Mom, the woman who gave birth to me, constantly states, “The one with the primary responsibility to the individual’s future is that individual.” NEVER – NEVER WRITE: Anonymous once said, “The most important person to be honest with is yourself.” A wise man once said, “Do not do what you would undo if caught.” Write On!

17 Tie it in to the topic Make sure it supports the reason
After you have stated the quote and the explanation, you must tie it into the topic. The examples on the following slides tie-in or support reasons from this prompt: Many parents are concerned that candy and sugary drinks are contributing to an unhealthy lifestyle for students and want to ban them from schools. Think about whether you think this is a good idea. Now write to persuade the reader whether unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks should or should not be banned from schools. Write On!

18 Tie it in to the topic Make sure it supports the reason
My grandfather used to always say, “The first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want.” In other words, it is my job to make the right choices and find ways to reach my goals. To this day, I think about his advice whenever I am faced with a difficult decision. This is especially important because I know I may be the only one with my best interests in mind, particularly when it comes to my health. As a result, I think it’s important for schools to stop selling junk food to students. (Followed by thesis, justifier, or other supporting sentences.) Write On!

19 Tie it in to the topic Make sure it supports the reason
Patricia Sampson once said, “Self-reliance is the only road to true freedom, and being one’s own person is its ultimate reward.” Basically, having freedom of choice means counting on yourself to earn it. So often, it is easier to sit by and let others make important decisions that can limit our freedoms. For example, many people believe schools should not sell foods considered unhealthy; however, I support having a variety of choices because I believe students should have the right to purchase the food they want. (Followed by thesis, justifier, or other supporting sentences.) Write On!

20 Tie it in to the topic Make sure it supports the reason
Coach Johnson, my baseball coach, always encourages us before a game by reminding us, “You create opportunities by asking for them.” In translation, the team can be successful by working together to make openings for winning moments. This quote definitely applies to me in all situations because I never settle for the status quo. I constantly find ways to improve myself and my community. Since this is so important to me, I believe I should support parents in removing unhealthy options from school vending machines. (Followed by thesis, justifier, or other supporting sentences.) Write On!

21 Tie it in to the topic Make sure it supports the reason
“It is our choices …” I recently read, “that show who we truly are far more than our abilities.” Specifically, the person we become is a direct result of the decisions we make. In today’s world, it is sometimes easier to make bad choices than good ones. Although choices can range from what shirt to wear to whether or not to attend a party, no choices are more important than those that affect your health. Eliminating unhealthy snacks and beverages from school vending machines increases the likelihood that students will make responsible, smart decisions about the foods that they eat. (Followed by thesis, justifier, or other supporting sentences.) Write On!

22 Tie it in to the topic Make sure it supports the reason
“Fight for your opinions, but do not believe that they contain the whole truth, or the only truth,” Charles A. Dana once said. This means we should be aware that our beliefs are not necessarily the only valuable ideal. Though good nutrition is important to me, many of my friends enjoy eating a variety of foods and beverages that aren’t very healthy. I may not choose to join them, but I respect their right to eat what they want. As a result, I believe school vending machine offerings should not be limited. (Followed by thesis, justifier, or other supporting sentences.) Write On!

23 Tie it in to the topic Make sure it supports the reason
Andy Warhol said, “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” With this in mind, I always know I have the power to initiate positive change. Sometimes, simply sharing a few kind words with someone down in the dumps can make a huge difference in their day. Other times, it is necessary to take on a larger problem. Since childhood obesity is an increasing problem in our country, it is important that I am part of creating an environment that encourages health. Therefore, I believe schools should not be allowed to sell foods and beverages that do not have any nutritional value. (Followed by thesis, justifier, or other supporting sentences.) Write On!

24 Tie it in to the topic Make sure it supports the reason
“No act of kindness, no matter how small,” my teacher always says, “is ever wasted.” To clarify, no matter how insignificant a kind act may seem, it may have powerful consequences for someone else. Even though we all have our own issues to deal with, lending a helping hand to others ultimately leads to a better community and a better life for us all. Working to create a healthy environment is just one way we can improve the lives of those around us. Limiting the options for school vending machines would enable kids to make healthier food choices, and lead to a better quality of life. (Followed by thesis, justifier, or other supporting sentences.) Write On!

25 Tie it in to the topic Make sure it supports the reason
Recently, I read, “Good habits result from resisting temptation.” In other words, to form positive behaviors, one has to avoid temptation. For many teenagers, it is easier to make the decision to eat chips, soda, and candy because it is readily available. In order to help teenagers make healthier choices, the temptation must be removed. Without a doubt, including only healthy choices in vending machines at school, will allow students the opportunity to form high-quality eating habits. (Followed by thesis, justifier, or other supporting sentences.) Write On!
