Chapter 12

2. Miss White had just finished serving a customer when Brian and his team entered the gift shop. It was only a small shop but every space was filled with Gallowfield ghost souvenirs, from books, to tea towels and ornaments.
Miss White explained that the shop was one of the oldest buildings in the village. The cellars had been used as a prison to lock up criminals before they were taken to the gallows. She told them that she lived in the rooms above the shop.
Toby asked if they could visit the cellars.
"I'm afraid not", she said. "I use them as a storeroom and don't let visitors down there, although the other night something really peculiar happened."

3. "I was just getting ready to go to bed", she explained, "when I heard what sounded like groaning and chains being rattled and voices begging for mercy."
"What did you do?", asked Claire.
"It gave me quite a fright", said Miss White. "I rushed next door to get help from Mrs Strong. She came back with me and both of us checked the whole building. We didn't find anything."
"I was sure I had closed all of the doors when I went to get Mrs Strong. When we got back to the shop the front door and the cellar door were open. I was worried someone had broken in."
"Was anything missing?", asked Brian.
"No", said Miss Smith. "The only thing I can't find is the key to the cellar door. It's a very old key, but I do keep misplacing it. I'm sure it will turn up."

4. Brian and the team thanked Miss White and went back to the village hall.
The vicar was talking to Mr Strover.
"The angel was there yesterday, when I showed these boys and girls around the church", he said. "It was there at the end if the day when I locked the church up. Sometime during the night someone has gone into the churchyard and taken it."
The vicar explained to them that someone had stolen the angel from the gravestone of the Red Lady.
They spent the afternoon in the village hall editing their interviews.
On the way back to the youth hostel Brian was very quiet.
He told Toby, Matthew, Paul, Michael, John, Claire and Abigail to meet up in the boy's dormitory.
