HOW TO FIND SLOPE? 1. Use the formula and count the spaces on a graph.
There are three ways in which we can solve for slope: 1. Use the formula and count the spaces on a graph. RISE RUN Slope = 2 3 =

HOW TO FIND EQUATION OF A LINE?
1. You are given the slope and the y-intercept. EXAMPLE: m = -2, b = 3 Use the slope y-intercept form of the equation of a line. SOLUTION: y = -2x + 3 y = mx + b

HOW TO FIND EQUATION OF A LINE?
SOLUTION: 2. You are given the slope and one point on the line. Step 1: Find the slope Step 2: Find the y-intercept Step 3: Write the equation EXAMPLE: m = -2, A(-1,3) Step 1: You have the slope: m = -2 Step 2: Find the y -intercept y = mx + b (3) = (-2)(-1) + b 3 = 2 + b 3 - 2 = b 1 = b Step 3: Find Equation y = mx + b y = -2x + 1

HOW TO FIND EQUATION OF A LINE?
SOLUTION: 3. You are given two points on a line. EXAMPLE: R(1,4), S(4,-2) Step 1: Find the slope Step 2: Find the y-intercept Step 3: Write the equation y2 - y1 x2 - x1 Slope RS = (-2 - 4) (4 - 1) = -6 3 = = -2 Continued next slide
