Mission Objectives Orographic/island effects on the Mei-Yu/LLJ system and the associated convection during frontal passage and island effects. Mesoscale environment for heavy precipiation

Maximum rainfall along the coast

3-h Lightning ending 05 LT May 31

3-h rainfall accumulation ending 15 LT May 31 from QPSUMS

3-h Lightning ending 1700 LT May 31

The Mei-Yu front passed northern Taiwan in the early evening last night with heavy precipitation. During takeoff in the early morning, lightning activities were active over the ocean off western Central Taiwan. At 5 am, the surface data suggest that the surface front already passed Peng-Hu within the central Taiwan Strait. The deep convection west of Taiwan associated with the Mei-Yu front is enhanced by the convergence between the land breezes and the southerly flow along the coast. An active northeast-southwest orientated line was observed off the southwestern coast with echo tops reaching 16 km. There are lightning activities inland over southwestern Taiwan and offshore. The maximum 9-h (00-09 LT) accumulated rainfall over southern western Taiwan coast exceeds 35 mm. Another rainfall maximum occurs along the western/northwestern coast with maximum exceeding 45 mm.

Summary The windshift and the convective line associated with the Mei-Yu front within the Taiwan Strait were sampled. The airflow and rainfall are affected by island effects. The mesoscale airflow and conditions upstream of the southwestern coast in the early morning were also sampled. We don’t have afternoon flights yet. Afternoon flights are needed
