Terrestrial Biomes 3.2
2
Remember Biomes? Biome Biosphere- most broad level Ecosystem
Biological Community (Or just community) Population Organism –most basic level Biome: a large group of ecosystems that share the same climate and have similar types of communities. Ex: Monroe County has similar types of communities (Sequoyah High school, Tellico High school). We have the same abiotic factors (we all get out of school if there’s snow)
3
What characterizes a Biome?
Weather- the condition of the atmosphere at a specific place and time Latitude- the distance of any point on the surface of Earth from north to south. Climate- average weather conditions in a specific area, these conditions include temperature and precipitation.
4
Types of terrestrial Biomes
Terrestrial- having to do with land or planet Earth. Tundra Boreal Forest Temperate Forest Temperate woodland and shrubland Temperate grassland Desert Tropical Savana Tropical seasonal forest Tropical rain forest Mountains Polar regions
5
Tundra The Tundra is a treeless biome with a layer of permanently frozen soil below the surface called permafrost. Where is it found? South of the polar ice caps. What lives there? Caribou, polar bears, wolves, salmon, trout What plants are there? Short grasses, shrubs What’s it like there? Between -34°-12° C, soggy summers, cold and dark much of the year.

7
Boreal Forest The Boreal forest is south of the Tundra, it is also called the northern coniferous forest, or Taiga. Where is it found? Canada, Northern Europe and Asia. What lives there? Moose, beavers, deer, wolverines, mountain lions. What plants are there? Spruce, fir trees, small shrubs What’s it like there? Between -54°-12° C, summers are short and winters are cold, long, and dry.

Boreal Forest
9
Temperate Forest The temperate forest is characterized by trees that shed their leaves in fall. Where is it found? South east Canada, Eastern U.S, East Asia, Australia, and Europe. What lives there? Squirrels, rabbits, skunks, birds, deer, black bears What plants are there? Oak trees, beech trees, maple trees, shrubs What’s it like there? Between -30°-30° C, well defined seasons with hot summers and cold winters.

Temperate Forest
11
Temperate woodland and shrubland
Open woodlands/shrublands are found in areas with less rainfall than temperate forests. Where is it found? West coast of North/South America, Mediterranean sea, south Africa, and Australia What lives there? Foxes, jack rabbits, birds, bobcats, coyotes, snakes butterflies What plants are there? Evergreen shrubs, corn oak trees What’s it like there? Between 10°-40° C, very hot, dry summers; cool, wet winters
12
Temperate woodland and shrubland
13
Temperate grassland The grassland is characterized by fertile soil. Drought, grazing animals, and fires prevent grasslands from becoming forests. Where is it found? Prairies of North America, South America, Savannas of Africa. What lives there? Gazelles, bison, horses, lions, deer, mice, spiders, quail, snakes, wolves What plants are there? Grasses, herbs What’s it like there? Between -40°-38° C, hot summers, cold winters, fires are normal

Desert Deserts exist on every continent except Europe. Deserts can be home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Where is it found? Every continent except for Europe What lives there? Lizards, bobcats, birds, tortoises, rats, antelope What plants are there? Cacti, joshua trees, Succulents What’s it like there? Highs between 20°-49° C, lows between -18°-10°C. Very infrequent rainfall.

17
Tropical Savanna A tropical Savanna is characterized by grasses and scattered trees in climates that receive less rain than some other tropical areas. Where is it found? Africa, South America, Australia What lives there? Lions, Hyenas, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, birds, insects What plants are there? Grasses and scattered trees What’s it like there? 20°-30° C, summers are hot and rainy, winters are cool and dry

Tropical Seasonal Forest
Tropical seasonal forests are also called tropical dry forests. They resemble the temperate deciduous forest because of their dry season. Where is it found? Africa, Asia, Australia, South/Central America. What lives there? Elephants, tigers, monkeys, koalas, rabbits, frogs, spiders What plants are there? Deciduous and evergreen trees, orchids, mosses What’s it like there? 20°-25° C, rainfall is seasonal, there are dry and wet seasons.

Tropical Seasonal Forest
21
Tropical Rain Forest- Most biodiverse
The tropical rain forest is characterized by its massive rain fall throughout the whole year. Where is it found? Central/south America, south Asia, western Africa, northeast Australia. What lives there? Chimpanzees, bengal tigers, elephants, orangutans, bats, toucans, sloth, cobras What plants are there? Bamboo, sugar cane, broadleaf evergreens What’s it like there? 24°-27° C, humid all year, rains constantly, hot and wet temperatures.

Key Points There are several different Biomes throughout planet Earth.
These Biomes are responsible for supporting biodiversity. It’s important that we take measures to protect these different Biomes and all the life that they support.
