1 Monsters & Aliens-Intro to Dichotomous Keys
This lesson is an introduction to using dichotomous keys. You will complete a flip chart and then sort extraterrestrial cards with your team. SUBSTITUTION Technology acts a direct substitute, with no functional improvement Open up ActivInspire. Open the folder named Monsters and Aliens. Complete the flip chart. Once finished, reset the flip chart. Find the cards on the Science table. Sort each of the extraterrestrials into families. Record the amount and types of families on the provided paper and turn it in to your class shelf. This task uses: Flip Chart from ClassFlow Marketplace named Dichotomous Keys Extraterrestrial Enigma lesson from NMSI Learning Objective(s): Students will classify organisms based on structural characteristics using a Dichotomous key. A Dichotomous Keys with EdPuzzle You will watch a video and answer some questions in EdPuzzle. AUGMENTATION Technology acts as a direct tool for substitution with some functional improvement. Go to Mrs. LaBove’s Blackboard site and log in. Go to the Edpuzzle Tab. Watch the video titled Dichotomous Keys and answer the questions that appear. Find the cards once again on the Science table. Get your team paper from the class shelf. Sort them back into the families you have already made. Sort each family into 2 groups and write those groups on your team paper. Turn your paper into the class shelf. You will share the names of your extraterrestrials families to the Blackboard World. You will then complete the Extraterrestrial Enigma worksheet. MODIFICATION Technology allows for the creation of new tasks that were previously not conceivable Get your team paper from the class shelf. Get the bag of extraterrestrials. Sort your extraterrestrials into the families. Collaborate with your team in order to name each family. Write the names of each family in your class folder on my Blackboard Discussion Board. Comment and ask questions on to at least 2 other teams. Use the dichotomous key that is provided in order to name each extraterrestrial. Write the scientific name for each extraterrestrial under the appropriate picture located on the worksheet. Turn your worksheet in to the class shelf. Save your 10 characters into a PowerPoint presentation. Name the PowerPoint presentation using the following template (Hour-Table) 4. Your team will now create a dichotomous key using your 10 characters. 5. Be sure that your directions are clear enough for a team in another class to understand their directions. Be specific with your descriptions. Nothing too broad.
