Do Now: Raul made Table 1 on the left. Rita made Table 2. Rita says that even though the numbers in their tables look different, they have the same value. Is Rita correct? Prove your answer.

Objective: Read and write numbers in scientific notation.
Homework: Page , #22-28, 36-40, evens
3
Scientific Notation Used to write large or small numbers
Uses powers of ten to express decimal numbers Examples: 1.2 x 103 = 1.2 x 1000 = 1200 5.6 x 100 = 5.6 x 1 = 5.6 3.5 x 10-1 = 3.5 x 0.1 = .35 How do the exponents tell you which way to move the decimal place? Positive Exponent: move decimal to right Negative Exponent: move decimal to left
4
Write Numbers in Decimal Form
The EE button on your calculator can be used for scientific notation. 2.83 x 101 4.9 x 105 8 x 10-1 1.23 x 10-3 2.39 x 104 1.045 x 107 3.7 x 108 8.4 x 10-6 1.0 x 10-2 9.2 x 10-8
5
Write Numbers in Scientific Notation
When you have to move the decimal to the left, exponent will be positive. When you have to move the decimal to the right, exponent will be negative. 34000 1.78 0.0007 423 2,000,000 0.0001 0.0098

Operations in Scientific Notation
(1.4 x 104)(7.6 x 103) = (1.4 7.6)(104 103) = x 107 = (1.064 x 101) x 107 = x 108 (2.3 x 103)(1.8 x 10-5) (4 x 10-2)3 = 43 x (10-2)3 = 64 x 10-6 = (6.4 x 101) x 10-6 = 6.4 x 10-5 (5 x 10-4)2
7
Operations in Scientific Notation
1.2 x 10 − x 10 −4 = 0.25 x 103 = (2.5 x 10-1) x 103 = 2.5 x 102 5.2 x x 10 1
