HAIL Imagine a baseball dropped from an airplane!
Better hope you’re not under it when it lands! Hail is a natural disaster and can be very dangerous!

What is hail? Hailstones are small balls of ice.
thunderstorm + hail = hailstorm The bigger the hailstone, the faster it falls! A large hailstone (NOAA)

Hot and Cold It may be hot up in the attic…. HOT AIR RISES But you have cold feet… COLD AIR SINKS

Water droplet is picked up by warm updraft to area of cold temperatures and FREEZES.

Hail stone begins to fall, carried by cold downdraft, begins to thaw as it moves into warm air toward the bottom of the thunderstorm.

But…our little water droplet may also get picked up again by another warm updraft.

HAILSTONES ARE LIKE ONIONS!
With each trip above and below the freezing level, water droplet adds another layer of ice. Hailstones have layers! Onions have layers! HAILSTONES ARE LIKE ONIONS!

Finally, with many layers of ice, it FALLS to ground as hail.
