An official count of how many people and dwellings there are in Tokelau
Provides an overall view of the people of Tokelau and the places where they live
Used to plan vital public services, such as education, health, housing, and transport

Why have a census?
Information from the census helps determine how government funding is spent in the community
Tells how many people there are, and where they live
Provides evidence for policy decisions
Helps make decisions about which services are needed and where they should be located (eg, schools and electricity needs)
Helps keep track of Tokelau’s international position (eg United Nations Millennium Development Goals, Secretariat for the Pacific Community, New Zealand Government)

People who normally live in Tokelau but are travelling on official duties
People away from Tokelau for medical treatment as:
medical patients under the Health Referral Scheme or privately funded
family member(s), caregiver(s), or guardian(s) who are accompanying patients overseas to get medical treatment
People visiting other countries who are away for less than 12 months

What does a census involve?
Interviewers
Trained interviewers visit each house with a digital census form
Census form (digital for the first time in 2016)
Interviewers use the form to ask people in each house a set of questions
One person answers about the house they are in, and the people who are away
Each person in the house answers questions about themselves
Completed forms
The information on the forms is taken away and turned into statistics

Who gets to see the information?
Security and confidentiality is a top priority
Census forms are not made public
People who see them must sign life confidentiality agreements
includes all interviewers, district supervisors, us, and data processors
people who have signed these agreements can be prosecuted if they reveal personal information
Information is only released as statistical tables
no individuals or families will be identified
once the tables are released, anyone can use them, including government, churches, families, and individuals
