Seminar on WiMAX BY: NILISHA AGARWAL EC-08
2
INTRODUCTION WIRELESS means transmitting signals using radio
waves as the medium instead of wires. Characterstics of wireless: a. Mobility b. Reachability c. Simplicity d. Maintainability e. Roaming Services f. New Services
3
Wireless technologies
Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN) Wireless Broadband Access (WBA)
4
WiMAX WiMAX is: Acronym for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. Based on Wireless MAN technology. continued…………..
5
……………………….continued A scaleable wireless platform for constructing alternative and complementary broadband networks. A certification that denotes interoperability of equipment built to the IEEE or compatible standard.
6
What is a ? The a standard for 2-11 GHz is a WMAN technology. The IEEE Working Group develops standards that address two types of usage models: A fixed usage model (IEEE ). A portable usage model (IEEE e).
7
WiMAX Speed and Range Initial speed of nearby 40MBPS
Could be deployed in a variety of spectrum bands: 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz, 3.5GHz, and 5.8GHz
8
WiMAX SALIENT FEATURES
Two types of services: Non-line-of-sight Line-of-sight Very high peak data rates Adaptive modulation and coding WiMAX uses OFDM

Wimax forum The name "WiMAX" was created by the WiMAX FORUM, which was formed in June 2001. Non profit organisation . Role is to promote knowledge about WiMax.
12
WiMAX and Wi-Fi Comparison
s.no. attributes wimax Wi-fi 1. IEEE Standards IEEE IEEE 2. Range/speed 40miles/>70Mbps Few hundred feet/54Mbps 3. Bit rate 5 bps/Hz 2.7 bps/Hz 4. Primary Application Broadband Wireless Access Wireless LAN 5. Mobility Mobile WiMax (802.16e) In development
13
conclusion WiMAX is better than Wi-Fi:
as it satisfy a vareity of needs. Can provide a wideb area range. Supports high bandwidth solution.
