CHEM 433 – 12/1/10 IX. Chemical Kinetics (Ch. 22 & Handout)
• Determining Rate Laws (22.1, 22.3) - Integrated Rate Laws - graphical methods • Elementary Reactions: - “order” vs. “molecularity” • Connection between EQ and kientics (pre-temp dependence version…) EXAM #5 is ….? HW #11 is out – review sheet/web update ASAP.
2
Consider the following reaction, and the table of (initial) rate data:
H2O (g) SO3 (g) H2SO4 (g). a) Write rate law in the blank below. RATE = __________________________ b) Calculate the value of the rate constant, w/ the proper units. c) Does the reaction occur as written, in a single elementary step? Explain. [H2O] [SO3] Rate 0.01 M 1.0 x 104 M/sec 0.02 M 4.0 x 104 M/sec 2.0 x 104 M/sec
3
Show that for: RATE = k [A]2
A plot of 1/[A] vs. t will be linear, w/ a slope = k. Also show that the half-life is given by: t1/2 = 1 / k[A0]
