scale, place, and space
2
scale Size of the unit studied (local, regional, or global scale); Map scale (mathematical relationship between the size of an area on a map and its actual size on earth)

scale differences: maps of florida
AP Human Geography Chapter 1 - Thinking Geographically scale differences: maps of florida The effects of scale in maps of Florida. (Scales from 1:10 million to 1:10,000) llhammon Spring 2017
5
place A specific point on Earth distinguished by a particular character.
6
perception of place Belief or "understanding" about a place developed through books, movies, stories, or pictures.
7
sense of place State of mind derived through the infusion of a place with meaning and emotion by remembering important events that occurred in that place or by labeling a place with a certain character.

Space -The amount of space between places
-The amount of connectivity between places

Spatial Interaction • Interdependence exists among places based upon the degree of spatial interaction. • It is established through the movement of people, ideas, and objects between regions. llhammon Spring 2017

Distance Decay Time and distance cause time-distance decay. Not only is distance an issue but the time it takes to reach an area also has an affect. Distance decay has a negative correlation. As distance increases the level of connectivity decreases. Everything is related to everything else but near things are more related than distant things. Distance decay is the idea that the further away something is the less it is influenced by it. Over time distance decay of innovation has declined. This has been due to the interconnectivity amongst places through colonization, improved methods of travel, and technology. Time-distance decay can mean for example that if it takes too long for an idea or innovation to reach an area the less likely they are to adopt that idea or innovation. Austin Dallas Beijing

Time-Space Convergence
The idea that distance between some places is actually shrinking as technology enables more rapid communication and increased interaction between those places.

Space-time compression
Defined as the decreasing effect of distance on the speed of human travel across space, in movement of people and communications.
