Born in Augusta, Georgia but spent early life in SC.
Took no formal art as a child, but wanted to be an artist. Moved to New York to study art, but was drafted.

Worked in a book store and as a window display
Worked in a book store and as a window display designer for Tiffany and other stores. Began experimenting with different styles. Held his first one-man show in 1958. Became successful because his work was different--not emotional like abstract expressionists.
