3 FOCUS QUESTION How did the Allies turn the tide against the Axis Powers? -The U.S. entered the war on the Allies side with Great Britain -The Axis Powers included Germany, Italy & Japan

4 The Allies Focus on “Europe First”
The Axis Plan They don’t have one Each one has a different dream—they aren’t coordinated The Allied Plan Unified goal Know they have to fight a 2 front war Europe The Pacific Defeat Germany first (most dangerous)

5 Allies in Europe U-Boats Battle of Stalingrad
“wolf packs” of German U-Boats in the Atlantic Ocean Radar helped the Allies find the U-Boats and beat them Battle of Stalingrad Stalingrad is in Russia Hilter invades Stalingrad in 1942 He wants the oil there Soviet resistance and the harsh winter stopped the German advance Considered the turning point in the war in Europe

6 Allies in Europe Allies drive the Germans out of North Africa
Dwight Eisenhower commanded the troops against German general Erwin Rommel Battle at Kasserine Pass (we won but learned a lesson) Showed that American troops were not trained well enough for battles in the desert Because of this, Eisenhower puts General Patton aka “Blood and Guts” in charge of the troops in Africa

7 Putting Pressure on Germany
Germany is now on defense Roosevelt and Churchill meet in Casablanca, Morocco to plan 2 decisions are made: Increase bombing of Germany & invade Itlay Allies will only accept unconditional surrender from the Axis Powers

8 Allies Invade Italy Allies can invade Sicily (in Italy) without much risk from U-Boats Eisenhower commands the troops 38 days after the invasion, Italy surrenders

9 Bombers Batter Germany
Bombing Germany Saturation Bombing Bombing at night to inflict maximum damage without being shot down Strategic Bombing Targeted Germany’s key political and industrial centers Why would they target these areas? Tuskegee Airmen African American squadron that escorted the bombers Did not lose a single bomber

10 The Pacific Japan kept attacking American and British colonies in the Pacific Battle of Midway Admiral Yamamato (Japan) attacked the US naval base at Midway to try and force American defenses back to California Admiral Nimitz (American) knew of Yamamato’s plan because we had code breakers The Allies win the battle and it is the turning point in the Pacific Japan is now also on defense

11 Americans take the Offense
In August 1942, America launched an assault on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands After 3 months, US drove the Japanese off the island Part of a strategy to approach Japan from 2 different angles
