Journal Entry Please choose one prompt to respond to.
This past Sunday was the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11. During a time like this, we often see many displays of patriotism. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, patriotism means “love for or devotion to one’s country”. In your journal, reflect on and respond to the following questions as they pertain to you: Did you witness any acts of patriotism this weekend (this could include in person or something you saw on television)? Did you partake in any or have you ever participated in any patriotic acts? Does anyone in your family do anything patriotic? What does it mean to you to show patriotism? Do you think it is important to show patriotism? A controversial news story that you may have heard recently involves NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick and his refusal to stand during the national anthem. Kaepernick explained his reasoning for doing this as follows, "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color". Many people have both supported and criticized Kaepernick’s actions. Reflect on your feelings about his actions. Use the following questions to guide your response if needed: Does Kaepernick have the right to express his beliefs in this way? Why or why not? Do you agree with Kaepernick’s actions? Explain your feelings. What does it mean to you to stand during the national anthem? Why do people do it? Why do you think this has been so controversial? If you do not finish, it is homework.
