1 Integration of gender roles in school and curriculum
By S. Monika

2 What is Gender Role What is Gender Role
The behaviors, attitudes, and activities expected or common for males and females. gender roles (behavior that is considered “masculine” or “feminine”)

3 Gender equality key factor for human development
realization of human rights. promoting gender equality is essential to achieving significant and sustainable progress related to health, education, the environment, civil society and the economy

4 Causes of Gender Inequality
Gender inequality limits women’s and girls’ access to information, decision-making power, economic assets, educational opportunities, social capital and other health and development resources. Greater risk of gender-based violence, human trafficking Early and forced marriage and other human rights violations

5 How to Reduce this Inequality or Gender Bias
Best Way to break the stereotype is From School and curriculum Need steps to integrate gender roles in school and curriculum

6 Gender bias is embedded in textbooks, lessons, and
teacher interactions with students. Peer groups Gender bias is part of the hidden curriculum of lessons taught implicitly to students through the every day functioning of their classroom.

7 Curriculum the aggregate of courses of study given in a school, college, university, etc.: school curriculum is fundamental to people's lives. Schools are meant to educate the next generation and to do so through school subjects.

9 Steps to bring about integration of gender roles in Schools and curriculum….
Seating arrangement Should not be seated or lined up by gender Teachers should treat both boys and girls equally Teachers socialize girls towards a feminine ideal. Girls are praised for being neat, quiet, and calm, whereas boys are encouraged to think independently, be active and speak up. Should not discriminate duties girls-cleaning, arranging etc and boys – managing, maintaining

10 Leadership roles should be given equally;
Can make them work in groups, which help in: Good friendly relationship; Learn to share responsibilities; Learn to respect each other views; Fear of opposites sex would go; Increase in confidence, especially girls Learn to adjust in team Thus it would enhance positive approach/ attitude between boys and girls.

11 Curriculum… Gender-fair materials need to acknowledge and affirm variation They need to be inclusive, accurate, affirmative, representative, and integrated, weaving together the experiences, needs, and interests of both males and females Avoid storybooks, fairy tales and texts describe a world in which boys and men are bright, curious, brave, inventive, and powerful, but girls and women are very weak, silent, passive, and invisible. If a boy is interested in doing SUPW, he should be encouraged. Teachers can help students identify gender-bias in texts and facilitate critical discussions as to why that bias exists Discussions about women problems can be discussed in class. Guidance and carrier counseling should be given to both; Giving equal importance to girls in sports. Provide range of real life role models to break this gender stereotype (sunitha williams, kalpana chawla, Jansi rani; Sindhu-batminton, Wrestlng-) In School itself sex education can be taught.

12 A permissive attitude towards sexual harassment is another way in which schools reinforce the socialization of girls as inferior (should be avoided) "When schools ignore sexist, racist, homophobic, and violent interactions between students, they are giving tacit approval to such behaviors Attitude should be changed boys are taunted for throwing like a girl, or crying like a girl, which implies that being a girl is worse than being a boy. According to the American Association of University Women Report, "The clear message to both boys and girls is that girls are not worthy of respect and that appropriate behavior for boys includes exerting power over girls -- or over other, weaker boys.

14 Gender equality: the state or condition that affords women and men equal enjoyment of human rights, opportunities and resources. Gender equality means that the different behaviors, aspirations and needs of girls and boys are considered, valued and treated equally . Thus greater gender equality is the end goal of gender-integrated programming
