9 Globalization Research
In a group of 2-3, research the following questions: What are the benefits to globalization? What are the negative effects of globalization?

10 What are the beneficial effects of Globalization?
Improved Technology Increases a country’s wealth with economic growth. Jobs Increases communication around the world and across countries. Decreases the size of the world. Exposes people of the world to products from around the world. Globalization has rapidly improved the social and economic status of women in the developing world. The explanation is straightforward: In a competitive, globalized world, the role of women becomes ever more valuable. Cultures that exclude women from full participation (e.g., Saudi Arabia) fall ever further behind.

11 Benefits cont. Over the past 20 years, 200 million people have left absolute poverty. Advances in medicine, improved public health policies, and greater food supplies have lowered infant mortality and lengthened life expectancy. Child labor declines as a country’s income increases. As trade promotes economic growth, globalization results in less child labor over time.

12 What are the negative effects of globalization?
Developed nations have outsourced manufacturing and white collar jobs. That means less jobs for their people. This has happened because manufacturing work is outsourced to developing nations like China where the cost of manufacturing goods and wages are lower. Globalization has led to exploitation of labor. Prisoners and child workers are used to work in inhumane conditions. Safety standards are ignored to produce cheap goods. Terrorists have access to sophisticated weapons enhancing their ability to inflict damage. Companies have set up industries causing pollution in countries with poor regulation of pollution. Fast food chains like McDonalds and KFC are spreading in the developing world. People are consuming more junk food from these joints which has an adverse impact on their health.

13 Negatives cont. The benefits of globalization is not universal.
The rich are getting richer and the poor are becoming poorer. Enemy nations can spread propaganda through the Internet. Deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS are being spread by travelers to the remotest corners of the globe. Local industries are being taken over by foreign multinationals. There is increase in human trafficking. Transnational Companies and corporations which were previously restricted to commercial activities are increasingly influencing political decisions.
