2 Eating Disorders Anorexia nervosa: condition in which a person reduces eating to the point that a weight loss of 15% below the ideal body weight or more occurs Don’t get calories or nutrients needed for survival

3 Anorexia Nervosa Effects of anorexia nervosa
Abnormal hormone secretion Weakened heart muscles and altered heart rhythms Diarrhea Loss of muscle tissue Loss of sleep Low blood pressure Lack of menstruation in women

4 Anorexia Nervosa Distorted body image– see themselves as overweight and fat even though they are underweight and thin It could be the result of biological or psychological factors Chemical/hormone imbalance Sexual abuse or perfectionism It is a way to gain control

May need to force feed to get essential nutrients back in the body In-patient/out-patient programs Psychotherapy Behavioral therapy Group therapy Family therapy

6 Eating Disorders Bulimia nervosa: condition in which a person develops a cycle of “binging,” or overeating enormous amounts of food at one sitting, and then using unhealthy methods of avoiding weight gain Binge eating followed by purging Vomiting, laxatives, excessive exercise, or fasting

7 Bulimia Nervosa Usually are excessively concerned about body shape and weight Typically average body weight, which is why it is often very difficult to detect The binge may result from anxiety, stress, depression, social pressure, or intense hunger after attempts to diet It continues due to a lack of/impairment in self-control

8 Bulimia Nervosa Health concerns Severe tooth decay
Erosion of the lining of the esophagus from the acid when vomiting Enlarged salivary glands Potassium, calcium, and sodium imbalances Damage to intestinal tract from laxatives Heart problems Fatigue Seizures

9 Eating Disorders Prevalence
Affects approximately 30 million people in the U.S. Women are more likely to develop than men Onset in early 20s However, there has been a recent increase in risk for girls years old
