2 Puritanism Puritans: Want to totally reform [purify] the Church of England.

3 Separatists Separatist Beliefs:
Puritans who believed only “visible saints” should be admitted to church membership. Believed in a total break from the Church of England.

4 The Mayflower 1620  a group of 102 people [half Separatists] .
Plymouth Bay way outside the domain of the Virginia Company. Became squatters without legal right to land & specific authority to establish a govt.

5 The Mayflower Compact November 11, 1620
Not a constitution, but an agreement to form a crude govt. and submit to majority rule. Led to adult male settlers meeting in assemblies to make laws in town meetings.

6 That First Year…. Winter of 1620-1621 very harsh
Fall of 1621  First “Thanksgiving.” Colony survived with fur [especially beaver], fish, and lumber. Plymouth stayed small and economically unimportant.

7 William Bradford Chosen governor of Plymouth 30 times in yearly elections. Worried about settlements of non-Puritans springing up nearby and corrupting Puritan society.

8 Massachusetts Bay Colony
1629  non-Separatists got a royal charter to form the MA Bay Co. Set off “Great Puritan Migration” of the 1630s Turmoil in England [leading to the English Civil War] sent about 70,000 Puritans to America

John Winthrop A Modell of Christian Charity. Became 1st governor of Massachusetts. Served for 19 years. ..we shall be as a City on a hill.The eyes of all people are upon us.

10 Characteristics of New England Settlements
Low mortality  average life expectancy was 70 years of age. Many extended families. Average 6 children per family. Average age at marriage: Women – 22 years old Men – 27 years old.

11 1st printing press in Cambridge 1638
Diverse economy Fishing, shipbuilding, trading = mercantile lifestyle Most adults literate; towns required to provide elementary education once > 50 families 1st printing press in Cambridge 1638 [Cf: Harvard est 1636; Wm & Mary 1st college in South not until 1693]

12 Patriarchy Authoritarian male father figures controlled each household. Patriarchal ministers and magistrates controlled church congregations Society centered around the family

13 Puritan “Rebels” Exiled in 1635. Roger Williams
Condemned MA Bay Charter. Favored separation of church & state Exiled in 1635. Roger Williams

14 Rhode Island 1636  Roger Williams fled & established RI colony, got royal charter 1663 Remarkable political & religious freedom Universal manhood suffrage  later restricted by a property qualification. Religious toleration even for Quakers, Catholics & Jews; separation of church & state, 1st Baptist Church. Known as the “Sewer” for “Lord’s debris” because seen as a dumping ground for unbelievers and religious dissenters

15 Puritan “Rebels” Threatened patriarchal control. Antinomianism
Means “against the law.” Carried to logical extremes Puritan doctrine of predestination.. Truly saved didn’t need to obey the law of either God or man. Anne Hutchinson

16 Anne Hutchinson’s Trial
1638  she confounded the Puritan leaders for days. Eventually bragged that she had received her beliefs DIRECTLY from God. Even more serious than the heresy of antinomianism. WHY?? Also banished

17 Other Puritan colonies
Hartford, Ct. est 1636 by Rev. Thomas Hooker “Fundamental Orders of Connecticut” 1639 Similar to Mass, except allowed voting & office holding for all adult male property holders Applied to Hartford & other valley towns.

20 Puritans vs. Native Americans
Indians especially weak in New England  epidemics wiped out ¾ of the native popul. Wampanoags [near Plymouth] befriended the settlers. Cooperation between the two helped by Squanto. 1621  Chief Massasoit signed treaty with the settlers.

21 The First Thanksgiving?
In 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving an official US holiday.

22 The Pequot Wars: Pequots  very powerful tribe in CT river valley. 1637  Pequot War Pequot tribe virtually annihilated an uneasy peace lasted for 40 years.

23 King Philip’s War (1675-1676} Metacom [King Philip]
Massasoit’s son who united Indians of New England.

Never a serious threat in New England again!!
