The book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is based on the true story of a girl named Sadako. Sadako, who was two years old, lived in Hiroshima at the time of the atomic bombing by the United States on August 6, Her home was about one mile from Ground Zero, or where the blast hit. In November of 1954, nine years later, Sadako developed swellings on her neck and behind her ears. The following January purple spots formed on her legs, she was diagnosed with leukemia, and given at the most a year to live. After her diagnosis, Sadoko spent her time in a nursing home folding paper cranes in the hopes of completing one thousand of them. According to an old Japanese legend, if she could fold one thousand paper cranes, she would be cured. While the book says she only folded 644 before dying on October 25, 1955, her surviving family members said she not only completed the 1,000, but reached approximately 1,300. Because of Sadoko, today paper cranes are used around the world to represent peace.

"oru” = to fold "kami” = paper
The Japanese word "Origami" itself is a compound of two smaller Japanese words: "oru” = to fold "kami” = paper The word “origami” comes from two Japanese words: “oru,” which means “to fold” and “kami,” which means paper. Origami originated in Japan following the invention of paper sometime during the 6th century. Prior to this time, parchment or vellum were used, which come from animal skin. The first Japanese origami is dated from this period and was used for religious ceremonial purposes only, due to the high price of paper. The folding of two origami cranes linked together from the first known book on origami Hiden senbazuru orikata published in Japan in 1797.
