Answer The phases occur because, as the moon revolves around the Earth, we observe different amounts of the side of the moon that is illuminated by the sun.

Did you know…? The Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours. The rotation of the Earth causes different parts of Earth to face the sun at different times. This results in a day and night in each 24 hour period.
