How to write an evaluation
VCAT is better at resolving disputes than courts. To what extent do you agree with this statement? Justify your response

1.) write a brief introductory statement indicating what your stance is on the question
Do you think VCAT is better at resolving disputes than courts? Or are courts better? (note – the examiner is looking for you to say courts as they can resolve all types of disputes, not just minor civil disputes.)

2.) compile your strengths and weaknesses based upon how many marks the question is. General rule is that 2 marks are allocated to every strength/weakness sequence

3.) begin your evaluation by either talking about a strength of your topic or a weakness (if the question specifically states “evaluate two strengths” you MUST start with the strength, or vice versa)

4.) compare this strength with its corresponding weakness (one that relates to the strength) “however”

5.) after discussing your strength and weakness, evaluate whether the strength overrides the weakness or vice versa)

6.) continue this process until you have spoken about enough strengths and weaknesses for your mark allocation

7.) have a brief concluding statement reiterating your original statement of your opinion

Remember – it is really important to use all your knowledge and examples in an evaluation. You must discuss your points in detail and elaborate upon them. The best way to do this is to use case examples. This shows the examiner that you have understood and can apply relevant information to your answer to justify your response
