Making Your Own Periodic Table – Part 2 -How to Draw Lewis Structures of Atoms
2
Anything in red print should be written in your notebook.
3
How to Draw Lewis Structures of Atoms
Find your element on the periodic table. Determine the number of valence electrons.(the number of electrons in the outer energy level) This is how many electrons you will draw.
4
Lewis Structures Groups (families) – columns on the periodic table
Find out which group (column) your element is in. This tells you the number of valence electrons your element has. You will only draw the valence electrons for a Lewis Structure.
5
Groups - Review Group 8 = 8 electrons in outer shell or FULL outer shell Group 1 = 1 electron in outer shell Except for He, it has 2 electrons(full outer shell) Group 2 = 2 electrons in outer shell Each column is called a “group” 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 All the elements in a group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell. The electrons in the outer shell are called “valence electrons”
6
Lewis Structures Write the element symbol (leave some space around it). Carbon is in the 4th group, so it has 4 valence electrons (outer shell only). Starting at the right, draw 4 electrons, or dots, counter-clockwise around the element symbol. C
7
C Lewis Structures Check your work.
Using your periodic table, check that Carbon is in the 4th group (column). You should have 4 total electrons, or dots, drawn in for Carbon. C

And that is Step 2 toward making your own periodic table - How to draw Lewis Structures

Now, on your worksheets, draw Lewis Structures for the remaining elements.
