2 55% SMBs support a mobile workforce
SMB’s #1 technology buying decision driver: AMI-Partners GM 2H 2013 97M devices in 2013 Growing to 147M in 2018 Tablets +26% Laptops +8% AMI-Partners GM 2H 2013 43% of SMB employees work in more than one location AMI-Partners GM 2H 2013 AMI-Partners SMB Trends 2014 As an SMB, you require technology mobility solutions that meet your business needs. A 2013 AMI survey reports that 73% of small businesses and 81% of medium businesses believe the single most important factor about whether to invest in a technology solution is whether it fits their business strategy and whether they will see a tangible benefit. We know that, as an SMB, you must spend very wisely. You view technology as an investment: in your business, in your strategy, in your lives, and in yourselves. A technology solution must deliver a high return, and so it needs to: Tangibly and materially improve your business – aligned with your strategy Be simple, with a small learning curve – you can’t waste your employees time in training Take advantage of and integrate with existing solutions – you need to recover your investments in previous projects, not spend more on new ones Be highly flexible and broadly useful – used across your various business situations, not just occasionally Have advanced security features – it must protect your business and personal information What are the strategic investments you are making now? What issues and opportunities are you facing and dealing with? And what are the key technology trends impacting your business? We see a few worth highlighting. The first is the rise of mobile computing According to the AMI survey, over half of SMBs globally support a mobile workforce and 43% of employees work from more than one location. In short, employees want to working from anywhere and on multiple devices – phones, tablets, PCs, phablets, smartwatches, even TV screens. SMBs purchased 97M devices in 2013 and that’s expected to grow to 147M in Tablets are the newest devices growing at 26% per year, but even the trusted laptop is growing at 8% annually. Enterprises want to enable employees to collaborate from anywhere, get their apps from anywhere. And you want them to, too - because it’s a huge benefit to your business. The second trend is push toward cloud services. PCs and devices are becoming much more capable through the use of cloud-connected services, which enable you to access data from anywhere and share it with anyone, collaborate real-time with colleagues, and communicate across the world instantaneously. Hosting your apps and services in the cloud enables you to shift IT costs from capex to opex, improving your cash position. It also allows you to scale IT up or down rapidly as needed. In short, cloud services are a tremendous boon to SMBs. Of course, “mobility” is more than just buying a cheap tablet and a cloud service. Device, application and cloud services management also needs to be simple, since you have limited time, money and IT resources. You want devices that are simple to set up and simple to maintain without a lot of overhead. Management needs to be built-into devices and services from the ground-up. And management needs to be built-in or use the solutions you’ve already purchased – you don’t want to pay for additional products just to manage them. Finally, you want to make sure that the solutions you rely on and put your hard-earned cash into are secure enough to protect your most vital asset: your data and information. You need products that include advanced security protections out of the box. And when it comes to security, solutions cannot be “second-rate” – you want and need to be enterprise- quality, but with an SMB price. “Many SMEs access cloud-based services on a variety of devices, including tablets and smartphones, which enable employees to stay connected on the run.” The Boston Consulting Group

4 Best platform for modern business
Notes Header 9/10/2018 Best platform for modern business Simple to use Integrates Cloud and PC Easy for Windows 7 users Familiar experience across devices Tailored to form factor Universal applications Cortana Designed for cloud services “Project Spartan” Core strengths of Windows Windows & Office “Continuum” Microsoft says that Windows 10 is designed for the modern world of cloud services and mobility, but what does that mean exactly? For starters: * Simple to use * Easy for Windows 7 users. If you know how to use Windows 7, you’ll know how to use Windows 10. The experience takes the familiarity of the Windows desktop and merges it with the power of modern Windows Store apps, Live Tiles, and Snap. The Start menu is back and better with Live Tiles and adjustable size. Snap is more powerful – snapping up into each quadrant easily, and displaying available apps to quickly choose the one you want. This ultimately means lower end-user training requirements since you and your colleagues will be able to just start using Windows 10 intuitively. Familiar experience across devices. The look and feel will be consistent across Windows 10 devices, meaning a Windows 10 laptop user will feel comfortable picking up and using a Windows phone or tablet. The experience will be familiar and intuitive to them. This is a big benefit and avoids colleagues having to learn how to get around new device types with different user experiences. Tailored to form factor. The user experience, or UX, for a Windows 10 PC looks like what you’d expect on a Windows PC, while at the same time behaving as you would expect when it’s running on a tablet or a smartphone. It actually has the intelligence to adapt to the device of your choosing, so it will know, for example, when you have a keyboard docked into your tablet and automatically adjust. Universal applications across devices. With Windows 10, users get the same experience across all devices. The Universal App platform allows developers to write apps that run across Windows smartphones, tablets, and PCs. The same code, with minimal if any changes, runs across all these devices, just adapting to the screen size and the types of inputs available on those device. The experience is much simpler, more streamlined, and familiar. Cortana. Note to presenter: Cortana is not available in all markets. Do not use this section or mention Cortana in markets where she is not available. Contact your MSFT representative for information about the availability of Cortana in your market. What is Cortana? Not what—who. Cortana is your clever new personal assistant, and she can search the web, find things on your PC, keep track of your calendar, change events, set reminders and answer questions —even tell you jokes. You just speak naturally or type your request in the search box. The more Cortana helps you, the more she learns about you and the better she gets at helping you. To get started with Cortana, you just type a question in the search box on the taskbar or select the microphone icon and talk to her. (Typing works for all types of PCs, but you need a mic to talk.) What can you say to Cortana? Speak naturally to Cortana about anything. Cortana can chat, get info, and do things for you. Cortana's Notebook and settings is where she keeps track of what you like and what you want her to do. Use it to inform Cortana about your interests, favorite places, and the "quiet hours" when you don’t want to be disturbed. You can adjust battery, speech, search and other settings, including the ones for Facebook. Cortana can give you a more personalized level of service based on info from your Facebook account. Of course, you can turn that feature off, or turn Cortana off altogether. * Integrates the Cloud and PC * Designed for cloud services. Windows 10 integrates the Cloud with the PC, delivering fully-functional devices that can do what you need to get your work done. Windows 10 does web-apps, browsing, Windows Store apps, Windows desktop apps, you name it. Runs SaaS apps for SMBs. And it runs newer cloud services being built for SMBs, such as: CRM in the browser E-commerce marketing ERP and inventory File storage and sharing Marketing automation Webinar Web analytics Office Online apps. Windows 10 integrates great with Office Online – the free Office apps online where you can work on files with anyone, anywhere, in real time—for free. You can create, store, and share documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and notebooks online. Save documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in OneDrive. And you can share them with others and work together at the same time. (Includes Word Online, OneNote online, PowerPoint online, and Excel Online.) Your Microsoft account can log you into your device, , OneDrive, and Outlook.com Sync’d with Outlook.com - for mail, calendar, and contacts. Your Mail, Calendar, People apps on Windows 10 automatically syncs with Outlook.com, Microsoft’s free service built to keep you connected across your devices with powerful organizational tools and a suite of Microsoft apps and services. Skype anywhere - on desktop, tablet, phone or online. With Windows 10, you can connect through Skype with the rich desktop app or with the touch-first tablet and phone app. You can also send messages, make calls, and video chat without leaving your inbox with Skype for Outlook.com. OneDrive built-in cloud storage. OneDrive is built-in so all your files automatically sync and are available wherever you are, and collaboration works extremely well with Office web apps built into Outlook.com. If you use Office 365, you can use the same user account and it lets you save to OneDrive or OneDrive for Business automatically. Windows Store. The Windows Store is one big Store where you can conveniently and confidently acquire Windows apps that run across all your devices: desktop, tablets, or smartphones. Because it runs as a cloud service, it’s always available, stores your download and license information, and lets you easily get a new device up and running. Synchronized settings across devices. When you use your Microsoft account or an Office 365 ID, your account, preferences, favorites, settings, and apps synchronize between devices. “Project Spartan” web browsing: Helping with those cloud services, and with all your web experience, Windows 10 will also feature “Project Spartan,” a new browser you will love across all your Windows devices. “Project Spartan” is just the code name - the final name has not yet been announced by Microsoft. Built for the modern web, always up-to-date. It’s built for the modern web and to put the web to work for you. It’s cleaner, smarter, and better at all the things you do online. Take notes directly on web pages, then share or copy to OneNote. Imagine writing directly on webpages and sharing your mark-ups with others. Integrated with Cortana, to get more done on the web. Spartan is the only browser with built-in note-taking and Cortana integration. (Note to presenter: Remove this bullet if the region you are in does not have Cortana. Reading mode, optimized for your device and distraction-free. The convenience of reading ad-free articles and saving your favorite reads for offline access. Delivers the core strengths of a Windows PC: Of course, Windows devices don’t run just web apps well. These are fully-functional devices that do everything you need to get your work done, whatever your existing infrastructure, and however you like to work. Rich client computing - Windows 10 is still Windows, enabling the best devices for powerful, general- purpose computing. You can run new modern Windows Store apps, desktop apps that run on Windows 7 and later, and of course the custom apps (or “LOB – line of business” apps) that you invested in for your company. Windows LOB apps and solutions for SMBs - There are literally thousands of apps for SMBs written for Windows, and the chances are your business will have one of these or something similar running in your environment. These are time-tested and supported, fully-functional apps that you rely on every day to run your business. Many businesses choose to run these critical applications on their PCs versus accessing them in the cloud. Accounting and finance Business process management CAD Content management CRM Databases Desktop publishing ERP Graphics and design Point of sale and payments Project management Excel for desktop Outlook for desktop PowerPoint for desktop Word for desktop Online and offline –Windows doesn’t need to be always connected to be functional. You can work with locally installed apps and save those files critical to your business to your local drive – and then be confident they will sync back to the cloud when you’re connected again. After all, you really shouldn’t need to be connected just to use your computer, work on docs, or get your mail. Largest choice of business peripherals - Windows 10 continues the strength of Windows in terms of supporting a huge ecosystem of peripherals, while being highly flexible and rich in functionality and yet still very secured. Windows and Office run “better together.” Windows 10 will allow users to have the familiar Office experience, including Office for Windows tablet and phone, which is built for touch and mobile. Office universal apps offer the ability to use apps like Mail and Calendar, present PowerPoint presentations, edit Word documents and more on the phone with a consistent experience on the PC. New universal Office apps for Windows 10: Built for touch and mobile scenarios while delivering the familiar Office experience across phones, tablets, and desktops, and enabling increased phone productivity (manage your Mail and Calendar, present from PowerPoint, edit Word documents). Of course, you can still run Office for Desktop as well. OneDrive for Business. The cloud storage space you get with Office 365 comes with an engine for that automatically synchronizes your shared files and folders with your team from the cloud to your Windows device. Enterprise Data Protection. Office 365 apps are full clients and support the encryption and functionality of EDP. We will go more into depth on EDP later in the presentation. (See security section.) Single sign-on with Office 365: Windows 10 PCs can now use Azure Active Directory (AAD) for logins and other key areas. This is the same identity service used in Office 365 – making a single identity possible across Office 365, Windows login, access to the Windows Store, OneDrive settings and file synchronization. Of course, you can also still continue to use Microsoft Accounts, Active Directory accounts, or local accounts on the PC if you wish. Use MDM controls built into Office 365. With its MDM agent, Windows 10 plugs right into Office 365 as a mobile client. That means that if you have Office 365, you can start managing your devices and Windows 10, even if you do not have another full MDM solution. “Continuum” feature (codename): This is a feature that allows a Windows device to change dynamically from a keyboard & mouse driven UI to a touch-screen UI. It will be used with 2-in-1s device like a convertible (such as the Lenovo Yoga) or a detachable (like the Surface Pro.) You can really take advantage the strengths of different device form factors, using a keyboard when you need to get a lot of typing and precision pointing in, and getting the easy-of-use of a touch screen to present or share ideas with a colleague or customer. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. 5 Affordable and innovative devices
Notes Header 9/10/2018 Affordable and innovative devices Built for agility Entry to high performance Thin, light, and stylish designs Faster boot times and responsiveness Designed for long battery life Wide range of modern devices Driving device innovation Revolutionary business devices Makes existing devices better Your business is constantly under pressure to provide not only enjoyable and productive experiences for your employees, but to do it within your budget and without sacrificing quality. With Windows 10, you can expect to have a range of great devices to choose from – from those focused on affordability to those delivering new levels of innovation. * Built for agility * Today’s Windows devices are designed and built for today’s business world, where mobility and nimbleness are paramount. Thin, light, and stylish – Even today, Windows devices are designed to work where you are. From thin and light notebooks and 2-in-1s that convert from tablets into laptops, to feather-light tablets and phablets, and all the way to phones. Faster boot times and responsiveness – PC makers in recent years have been pushing the boundaries, literally, of what PCs look like and can do. Not only have they created thin, light, and stylish form factors, they have worked closely with Microsoft to substantially shorten boot times and increase PC responsiveness. For example, with Windows 8, instead of closing the kernel session Windows 8 hibernates it. Using this technique gave Windows 8 a significant advantage over Windows 7 for boot times % faster on most systems Microsoft tested. Although it is too early to confirm performance gains in Windows 10, Microsoft is making improvements that should shorten boot times even further. Designed for longer battery life – Chip manufacturers and PC makers are working closely with Microsoft to increase device battery life. One way Windows 10 is enabling longer battery life is through a new feature called Battery Saver, which, when turned on, automatically limits background activity and makes some hardware adjustments. * Entry-level to high performance * The broadest range of device choices – both price points and feature sets – has always been a strength of Windows, and the great ecosystem of Windows device partners remains focused on providing a range of form factors with Windows 10. Broad range of modern devices. It should not be hard to find a device with the price point, feature set and performance levels to address your needs – from desktop PCs to laptops, tablets and phones. Affordable devices – Microsoft knows every dollar matters to SMBs and that’s why they’ve designed Windows to run on extremely minimal hardware designs with ultra-low requirements. In fact, Windows PCs have now emerged under the $US300 mark, making the decision to purchase a new device much more palatable. On the other hand, Windows also scales to enable the highest-performance, feature-packed devices as well, and PC makers are still creating plenty of options – including high-performance devices and ruggedized units for demanding conditions. You should easily be able to find commercial devices with just the right configuration for your business needs – from liquid-draining keyboards to integrated smartcard readers, USB 3.0, lightning fast SSDs, and so on. Driving innovation in PCs and mobile devices. Pen. 2-in-1s. Touch laptops. Windows 10 will support new capabilities, new devices and new innovation. While Microsoft nor its hardware partners currently have a portfolio of Windows 10 devices we can show you today, their great ecosystem of devices will provide just the right device for just the right need, as shown here. Revolutionary new business devices and possibilities – Windows 10 is driving not only device innovation, but device revolution as well. HoloLens and Surface Hub are two examples of how Windows is changing the business device landscape and pioneering new experiences. Link to HoloLens: Link to Surface Hub: Making existing devices better – Windows 10 fundamentals can also light up your existing devices. Depending on the device you upgrade to Windows 10, or buy new, you should enjoy: Improved boot times Longer battery life Better performance Greater security Faster WiFi reconnect Multi-monitor and Snap improvements An improved task manager Plus all the other benefits of Windows 8 and Windows 10, fundamentally. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. 6 Simple to setup and manage
Notes Header 9/10/2018 Simple to setup and manage Set-up out of the box Light-touch management Upgrade existing PCs in-place Setup new devices with a single file Built-in cloud storage Your own Business Store Portal Use MDM built into Office 365 Advanced MDM with existing infrastructure Effortless updates Now let’s discuss another area where Windows 10 in particular is the right choice for small and medium businesses – the simplicity of setup and management. * Set-up out of the box * Upgrade existing PCs in-place. Of course, one of the great benefits of Windows has been the ability to upgrade existing devices without needing to buy new hardware, and Microsoft plans to provide a few options for deploying Windows 10 in your business. For Windows 7 and Windows 8 devices you already own. For existing devices that meet the minimum hardware requirements for running Windows 10, the easiest approach will be to use the in-place upgrade process to move from Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 directly to Windows 10. Windows does the work, preserving all data, settings, apps, and drivers. With an in-place upgrade, migrating to Windows 10 from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 can be done without reinstalling Windows from scratch, preserving your data, apps and drivers as required. Coming from Windows 8.1 is a similar process to the Windows 8.1 Update that was done through the Windows Store, so you’ll be up and running on Windows 10 quickly. Whether moving from 7, 8 or 8.1, this is a simplified process, focused on automatically preserving existing apps, settings, and drivers. It will be fast and reliable, with automatic roll-back in the event any issues are encountered. High compatibility bar. Microsoft knows that compatibility is extremely important to you, and as such they are designing Windows 10 so that most Windows 7-compatible hardware should work well with Windows 10, that desktop app compatibility will be strong, and that new Windows Store apps are compatible (for example, mouse-friendly when touch is not available). Microsoft is also continuing to invest in Enterprise Mode IE capabilities to maximize web app compatibility. Free upgrades for one year after launch. Qualified existing PCs running Windows 7 or greater and that meet the hardware requirements for Windows 10 will be provided the opportunity to upgrade for free for up to one year after launch. * Set up new devices right out of the box * Like many SMBs, you may not have IT staff with the training for PC/OS imaging and deployment, yet you still require customizing your PCs, moving between Windows editions to get required features, joining mobile device management systems, or adding policies to control your devices. Windows 10 provides capabilities to simplify all these processes. Devices through retail or channel. For PCs with Windows 10 pre-installed, we will also provide new capabilities to help transform a new device from its initial out-of-box configuration into a fully-configured business device. You can now take off-the-shelf PC hardware and apply what we call a “provisioning package” and the device is ready for use. Configure with a single file. Using a dynamic tool provided in Windows 10, you can create a configuration to apply to your devices that specifies IT policies, provides Edition upgrades, installs drivers, and enrolls in MDM solutions. the file. The configurations can be applied through a variety of techniques, including over , with a USB key, SD cards and even across a network. The workflow is this simple: Take the new device out of its box Apply your provisioning package to it, turning it into a configured device. Hand the device off to the end user, who can be productive immediately. Now, you can have your own hardware “image” without doing any of the traditional “imaging.” * Light-touch management * Microsoft now has a simpler approach to management that will benefit SMBs tremendously, allowing you to take advantage of the incredible cloud infrastructure Microsoft has built. Business Store Portal (“BSP”). Running your daily business typically requires great apps and content, and the ability to get these to your employees. The BSP is a new website that can be used by businesses of any type or size, and there is no cost to sign up. It’s not used directly by members of your organization – only by an IT administrator (or other selected individuals where there is no IT administrator) responsible for acquiring apps ever need to use the BSP. BSP is your own website for acquiring, using, and managing Windows Store apps. The main purpose of the Business Store Portal is for purchasing Windows Store apps for use in your business and distributing them to your employees BSP integrates with existing MDM and PC management solutions, but the BSP provides more, too. It integrates with mobile device management and PC management solutions and manages your application licenses. BSP complements the Windows Store. The BSP lets you make apps available in a private section of Windows Store not visible by the public, and even deploy your own line-of-business apps to members of your organization through the Windows Store infrastructure. Use the built-in Mobile Device Management (MDM) features of Office 365. If you already have Office 365, then you already have access to basic MDM functions. Windows 10 plugs right into that functionality. You don’t need to buy any new tools to get started with MDM. Advanced MDM control when needed. With advanced MDM, you can manage all your Windows 10 devices – and any other of the major vendors’ mobile devices - with a single MDM solution. Either on-premise or in the cloud. Either Microsoft Intune or 3rd party MDM solutions. (Note, if asked: You can continue using your Domain, Group Policy, and Microsoft management technology if you already have them installed.) This means that all your device management – whether Windows OS-based or from other vendors, and whether tablets, laptops, 2-in1s, desktops, or phones – can now be done with a single solution and a single console. This is what Microsoft means when it says “a simpler approach to management.” Use existing infrastructure. While Windows 10 is built to be the best cloud-computing client, if you have existing on-premise PC infrastructure components such as System Center Configuration Manager, then Windows 10 will continue to work with them as well. Effortless updates on your terms. Microsoft plans to deliver new innovation to Windows 10 devices on a regular basis. Windows 10 will offer customers a choice between continuous and immediate updates, frequent and more proven updates, and a “security and patches only” update model for long-term stability. Personal devices stay current with latest innovations. Consumers will receive latest feature updates, which are installed as they arrive via Windows Update. Businesses can update with market-tested updates. You can opt-in to the consumer mechanism as well, or you can choose to delay innovation updates by up to 90 days so they can first be tested thoroughly in the market. Option for mission critical systems to delay updates. Many SMBs have mission-critical systems (example: medical office equipment), which they want to remain largely unchanged, only receiving security updates and critical fixes. You will have the option of choosing this level of support as well. Benefits in user experience, management, and security. In every case, both security and non- security fixes will continue for the supported life of Windows 10 on a monthly basis. All your PCs and Windows 10 devices will stay patched and be better protected against online threats. Management is easier as well, since you don’t have to be concerned about which devices have which patches or upgrades. If they are set up to get updates, then they will stay “current.” Of course, this continuous innovation has benefits for the end user, who will receive new features and functionality without having to upgrade their OS. Microsoft, based on what many customers have told them, expects most businesses will have a mixed approach in how they choose to keep systems up to date, and Windows 10 supports this desire by allowing you to select a different pace of updates for different users or systems depending on the specific business needs of each. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. 7 Enterprise-quality security for SMBs
Notes Header 9/10/2018 Enterprise-quality security for SMBs Security for your devices Security for your data and user identities Trusted Boot App security Windows Defender Windows and IE SmartScreen Next Generation Credentials BitLocker Data Protection Enterprise Data Protection Windows will get more secure with Windows 10. And while Windows security features are designed for the world’s largest enterprises and governments, its foundation is built into all Windows editions so you, as an SMB, benefit from that design as well. Windows 10 helps you secure your devices, your user identities, and your data. * Security for your devices * Trusted Boot. Windows maintains platform integrity such that Windows components and even anti-virus software itself are protected from tampering. When Windows starts on the device, one of the very first actions it will take is to start the Windows Trusted Boot feature. This feature protects the Windows system core (kernel), privileged drivers, and system defenses such as an antimalware solution. The idea here that if Windows can prevent malware from being able to start early in the boot process and before system defenses have started, then Windows can prevent malware from hiding from those defenses. Trusted Boot is an architectural change in Windows 10 that effectively eliminates the potential for rootkit attacks, which are attacks that gain system access by tampering with the Windows boot process. App security. Once you have an OS platform running and start using apps, you need to have platform and application security to help ensure both are resistant to exploits when vulnerabilities are discovered. The reality when it comes to vulnerabilities is that as long as human being are writing software they’ll continue to introduce vulnerabilities into their code, and thus in Windows 10 Microsoft invested in a deep bench of functionality to deal with this eventuality. Microsoft calls this set of functionality “vulnerability mitigations,” and they’re designed to prevent attackers from being able to manipulate application functions that are already running in system memory. In Windows 10, these mitigations are designed to break the attacker’s playbook. For instance, one mitigation (called CFG) that Microsoft added to Windows blocked 96% of the vulnerability exploit techniques that were used against IE since That’s just one mitigation – there are many, many more in Windows 10. Investments in vulnerability mitigations are critical for the platform, but Windows’ key strategy for addressing them in the application space is within what are called “Universal Apps.” Vulnerabilities that are exploited in apps running in the sandbox are extremely limited in what they can do, as the app is isolated from the system, data, and other apps. Microsoft originally shipped in this Windows Phone 7 and then later integrated the capability into Windows 8, and it has been producing great results on those platforms ever since. Online Safety and Windows Defender. One of the challenges faced with any 3rd party antimalware solution is that when malware gets onto a device with sufficient privileges it is pretty effective at actually disabling the AV solution itself. In the consumer space, large percentages of devices are either out of date, have been disabled by malware or, in many cases, are devices that were protected only by a trial or subscription-based antimalware solution that has since expired. Starting with Windows 10, when a 3rd party antimalware solution has expired and is offering no protection Windows will attempt to help the user re-subscribe to their original antimalware solution. Windows 10 will remind them a number of times, but if within 3 days a user does not act Windows will then automatically turn on Windows Defender to ensure the user is protected. In addition, Windows Defender itself will be less susceptible to malware tampering. Microsoft calls this “protecting the guard.” In Windows 10, Defender has been isolated in the system using a technology called “Protected Processes” so that malware can’t tamper with its configuration and state. Interaction with Windows Defender and its configuration can only occur with processes that are trusted and signed using a special process. This level of protection is also available for 3rd party solutions. Microsoft also dramatically improved Windows Defender’s ability to detect malware. Windows Defender takes full advantage of the power of the cloud to get the fastest possible detection times, even for highly polymorphic malware. For instance, in some cases a device won’t have a signature for new malware that Microsoft is aware of, but your AV solution hasn’t yet received this latest signature file from Windows Update. When new suspicious files are detected on the system, Windows 10 can quickly use the cloud to vet whether or not it knows the file’s reputation and, if need be, can automatically force a cloud block well ahead of the distribution of the signature file. In addition, Windows Defender takes full advantage of new APIs and event channels that were designed based on 3rd party feedback, giving you the best protection capabilities yet. In today’s world it is fair to assume that all of defenses will fail us at some point, and to deal with this eventuality Windows put Defender Offline in the Windows Recover environment. In the event that Windows Defender can’t resolve an issue because the malware is too deep in the system, Windows can boot into the secured Windows Recover environment and repair the system from there. No longer will you need to go to the web to acquire an offline scanning tool that runs from a USB, DVD, or other peripheral. Windows and IE SmartScreen. Finally, it turns out that the best pathway for threats, whether they are phishing or malware related, is through a browser. It could be IE, Firefox, Chrome, you name it. As opposed to an antimalware solution which addresses threats after they’ve already landed on the device, the browser is in the unique position to be able to detect and block the threats before they ever make it onto the device. This type of blocking is done using SmartScreen technology and it quite literally is your first line of defense while you’re online. SmartScreen technology takes advantage of the Microsoft cloud, which crawls the internet looking for new URLs and apps to apply reputations to. From there, Windows and Internet Explorer can block malicious, or even suspicious, sites and apps. * Security for your data and user identities * Next Generation Credentials. Windows 10 includes a new solution that addresses all of the complexity and cost challenges you’ve faced to date with existing two factor authentication solutions, by enabling your users to use the devices they already have as one of the factors. This means you can use your mobile phone, whether it’s a Windows Phone, iOS, or even an Android device as one of the factors. The other factor will be biometric or a PIN. If your users can’t use their phones as one of the factors, they can enroll their actual Windows PC as one of the factors. Breach, theft, and phish proofing. This new identity can be virtually breach, theft, and phish proof as the user’s identity will be bound to the device itself. If an attacker is able to extract it, the best they can do is get encrypted data - which is useless to them. Another related feature also prevents “pass the hash” attacks by putting a user’s derived credentials into a container that is isolated from the rest of the system. Two-factor authentication. This new solution has all of the convenience of a password while at the same time having the enterprise-quality security of today’s two factor solutions such as SmartCards. Unlike those solutions, however, it’s very easy to deploy because it can all be provisioned electronically. There is no longer a need to issue a special ID card, use dongles, or buy devices with a card reader. BitLocker data protection Protects data when a device is lost or stolen using full disk encryption. Information protection starts with protecting the data when the device is lost or stolen. BitLocker is Windows’ solution for this scenario and it offers enterprise-quality, full-disk encryption. BitLocker also includes a feature called BitLocker-to-Go, which can protect your data when it’s stored on removable drives, such as USB thumb drives. Provides single sign-on and protection from cold boot attacks. Windows competitor’s Single Sign- On (SSO) capabilities have enabled you to unlock a drive and sign in with just a password, while BitLocker in Windows has required a PIN to unlock the drive and then the user’s password to actually sign-in. However, the competition’s advantage in experience came at a significant cost to users as these SSO implementations resulted in well documented deployment, performance, and reliability issues. With Windows 10, the need for a PIN has been eliminated on most device types and Windows can provide you a single sign-on experience that still maintains the performance, reliability and deployment benefits that have made BitLocker great. Maybe more important, Windows’ solution will better meet your security expectations. Enterprise data protection. BitLocker is a great solution for protecting data when a device is lost or stolen, but how can you protect your data from your users who may accidentally or even intentionally leak data? This is where a brand new Windows 10 features comes to play. The feature is currently called Enterprise Data Protection (or EDP), and it provides persistent file level encryption and basic rights management to corporate files. Separates and protects business data from personal data. EDP is great at identifying, separating and protecting corporate data, and in most cases it can do so without the need for application wrapping, reengineering, etc. EDP fully integrates with Azure Active Directory and Rights Management services to provide secured sharing B2B - and even B2C. Enables data protection wherever your data is. Unlike other data protection solutions, particularly container solutions on mobile devices, Windows has come up with a solution that doesn’t get in the way of the user experience. It doesn’t require users to use special folders, change mode, move into secure zones or partitions, etc. Instead, the Windows solution works completely behind the scenes and protects data where ever it lives on the device. Ensures only trusted apps can access your data. Windows’ solution is fully integrated within the experience you are already familiar with and you can continue to use the apps that you, or IT, choose to access protected content. Windows acts a broker that gates user and app access to protected data based on the policies you define. Delivers protection for mobile and the desktop. Because the Windows solution is integrated into the platform, you can use the same apps (e.g., Office, Notepad, and third-party apps) to interact with protected data whether it’s on the desktop or on a mobile device. This is a big differentiator for Windows, as in most cases you’re going to be forced to use completely different apps on your mobile versus desktop devices.
